One weapon that almost everyone has an opinion on is shotguns.  Max Brooks wrote in The Zombie Survival Guide that they are not as great as everyone thinks they are.  While many people consider them a primary weapon.
People will tell you they don't have enough range, or their shells are too bulky.  People also say that they take too long to reload.  If you support this weapon some arguments would be that it has the ability to stop zombies in their tracks.  Also if a zombie is too far away to be hit with a shotgun, why fight it instead of running away.  Shotguns are easier to aim than rifles, and when zombies approach and you are too nervous to think you need a shotgun to stand a chance of defeating a zombie.  Runners go to fast for someone to get a head shot with a rifle, but with a shotgun the spread of the shot allows a more sure kill.
I personally consider a shotgun a primary weapon, but let me hear your ideas.

I guess for some situations hand weapons could be primaries.  But unlike in the movies it would not be that easy to kill a zombie with a machete.  In order to decapitate even rotten flesh you will usually need at least to blows to the neck,  I personally would recommend a blunt object instead, that you could smash into the head crushing the brain.

unless its something like a carpenter hammer, using a blunt object to smash would cause a lot of fatigue, and fast. i've picked up a crowbar and swung it around to get the feel of it. it's heavy, even the smaller ones. Machetes are really light and i could hack with something like that and faster, than i could with a blunt object. i'm not saying they are perfect though, a lot of the ones out there arent the best quality. usually meant for light use, but the heavy duty ones truly made with purpose can do real damage. Deadliest Warrior: Somali Pirates vs. Medellin Cartel, the Medellin pulled out a high quality machete and were able to lop off an arm with ease during their testing with one swing as they hacked away at it. a weapon like that is a keeper.

The thing about a crowbar is this. It had way more than one use for it. Machetes, have two uses. Hacking bodies, or hacking brush. Im going to carry a crowbar, because I can also use it as a entry tool to get into abandoned houses, and buildings. In a pinch it could be used grappling hook to climb a wall(though I would need to be desperate to do that) it can be used as a hammer, pry bar when working on a vehicle. There are literally thousands of things I could use a crowbar for.

In the army they always hammered home what they called positive purchase when it comes to carrying a tool. If it has more than a couple uses. It buys the effort, and space in your pack. Its earning its keep so to speak. In the army we never cut down  brush when we would hump through the bush, so for me edged weapons have the purpose of hacking bodies. 1 purchase doesnt buy space in my pack. I can carry way more useful things with that weight.

should only be ad if you are in a vehicle or home where there is no problem with weight
if you don't have a pistol, then a shotgun is great...

but if you do have a pistol...well then it depends how good of a shot you are if a shotgun is best

Ugh.

Shotguns in the post apocalyptic world. I own two shotguns my self. I would use them as a close range, secondary weapon if needed. The shells pack weight and a pain in the ass to reload a shotgun if your not the best at loading. ( In which I'm not a master ). If your going to own a shotgun just for zed purposes. Get a pump action and don't have two one shots like me. Rifles are your primary gun in a zed world.

But one thing a shotgun does have is stopping power. You can kill about everything with a shotgun. One shot and a zed is done. ( If shot right ). But it doesn't have reload speed. and weight and recoil are also factors in having a shotgun.

But for zeds It's more of a close range weapon. Not a long distance. I would use it if my rifle jammed or I had no ammo. :/

If you read my post I am definitely not a fan of a shotgun for a primary. I do have an option for you you maybe interested in if you wanna knock off some of the recoil from your shotgun. Look at Messa Tactical for a collapsable stock, pistol grip combo. You can an replace the tube with a spring buffer tube. It will take a lot of the piss and vinegar out of the recoil. I have one on my 870HD and Ive fired 3 1/2 magnum through it with very little discomfort. I don't feel the recoil at all when I put 2 3/4 through it. It doesn't matter what type of load your using.
Recoil from a shotgun? SISSIES!!!!!!!!!  :D
Haha, I don't bitch about the recoil. If you don't want it though, there are some options. lol.
I believe the recoil is the biggest reason people shy away from a shotgun. These people feel so much recoil because they are afraid of it and don't learn to shoot it correctly.
Most people don't realize that a shotgun is suppose to set high on your shoulder, more on the delt and collar bone area than in the arm pit like most people shoot. I learned my lesson on that when I was in BT.
