I don't know if any of you have thought of this.
But as a distraction why not set up some kind of sound outpost?

Like for instance setting up a sterio at full volume on the roof of a small building to draw the Zed's to that location.

Of course my idea invovles a much bigger sound system wich would reach a larger area so i have clear running in that Zone.

I've been thinking about this for a while also. I've been thinking about setting up a trap of some sort where you would have the Z's attempt to attack a sound source somewhere where it would be like a bottleneck. Then using a bulldozer or heavy truck to crush them. It would definitely eliminate a good portion of them day after day and reduce the risk of injury or infection to us conciderably.
lol i saw a flash vid for valentine's day with the same idea. the two people lit up an electronics store full of tv's and while all the zeds were in the city mesmerized by the tv's, they went and had a picnic.
this is kinda like the fireworks idea in land of the dead.
Now that i think about it yea.

It just lasts longer.
Zombies are known to ignore sound alone. Perhaps if you put objects such as soap, which usually accompanies humans, in the outpost, it would increase the outpost's efficiency.
Any stimulant to the 4 of the known (Touch, Sight, Smell and Hearing (I don't want to test taste) senses is know to cause a "curiousity" in the Stag esspecially the Runners
you could play a loopin track of people screaming help and such, and zombies moaning. that would probably work, by drawing them away because they think theres another attack. and also, to draw them closer for extermination, you could play some music.
Well people screming "HELP HELP OH GOD HELP!" seems like a good idea but your gonna draw survivours with that as well... The wanna be hero Survivors....... Nevermind. Thats a great idea!

And yes Music would probably work better seeing as how this idea spawned from a joke whilst reading the survival guide.

Me:hey if Zombies are attracted to sound could'nt we set up like a speaker system?
Freind: What?... How the hell would that help?
Me: Well we play Barbie girl real loud and sit on the roof with pikes right? and kill anything that comes cause their gonna have murdurous intent survivour or not.
Freind: Your insane... and a moron...
It would only make sense to use the zombies numbers against them. They are a mob for the most part and not very bright to begin with, so large scale traps and ambushes would be very useful I would think. If one could lure and clump the zombies into a mob, then lure them into a kill / burn zone depending on how you planned on killing them all, it might even save on ammo and supplies. It also could be a fairly fast way to clear an area of large infestations. They seem to also follow the path of least resistance so funneling them would be viable via cars, fences, or anything not easily walked over.

There are many mining quarry's and dumps in the area of the US I live in that could be used to great effect to contain and burn large numbers of zombies. If burning them is not a viable option, I am sure a few trucks or bulldozers modified enough to ensure safety would be able to push them into a modified rock crusher, crush them against a quarry wall, or simply run them down. Just for example. There are many other large scale buildings and works that could be used to crush/kill/burn large numbers of stupid zombies. As long as they could be baited and funneled properly.

Fuel could be an issue but then again with 1.5 cars in every family or so and no one driving everyday to work, enough fuel should be around.

The only real catch is how to bait and lure them safely.
