now the difference for those who dont know, a battle rifle is a semi auto or full auto rifle shooting a full size rifle round like a B.A.R, M1a, Fal, CETME, and such. an assault rifle is a semi or fully auto rifle that shoots a short assault rifle round like SKS,AK,M4, ar-15, and such.
which is better, I say battle rifle, but I am biased as I have one and like it better.

A battle rifle can also be a bolt action, the only thing a battle rifle needs for its designation is a full power round. A assault rifle can't only be semi auto it has to have more than one firing mode, shoot a intermediate cartridge such as 5.56 or 7.62 x39 and have a detachable box magazine. The news media gets that term mixed up a lot as a semi auto only ar15 is NOT a assault rifle, technically just a semi auto rifle. As to the original question I would say an assault rifle since the ammo and weapon are lighter and it still packs adequate firepower.
Ryan, the point is getting a real assault rifle is almost impossible unless you have a class III, I don't have one, you don't either, and yeah your right about the bolt action my mistake, but the ar-15 is a civi m16 wether A1,A2,A3 or A4 who knows, then theres the m4 there is a civi model of that too
Yeah I know getting a real assault rifle is difficult, but I'm just saying a semi auto only isn't technically a assault rifle. The closest thing to a mil-spec M4 you can get is probably a Colt 6920.
My choice is the Assault/Sporting Rifle. it weighs less with effective ammo for taking human size targets and game. The ammo weighs less so you can carry more. I've shot he M-14 and MI Garand and the nice big round is great. My issue is the weight of the gun and the weight of the ammo. I have no problem moving with the gun but over a longer movement it would become very cumbersome. Unless I was shooting long distances I'd go with the carbine. If I needed a 308 I could find one in carbine size too.

I actually hav a CETME, its pretty short, its dead accurate, and its only weighs as much as an AK, the pricetag is a bit more tho
which CETME are you referring to the one I know of is basically a copy of the HK G3, which is not very short, but you are right on the weight, it is not that hefty.

Check their virtual catalog.
Anythin you could want at decent prices.
i have checked them out, even have a catalog, the problem is ny is bad for that sort of stuff
yeah it is, its short for me tho, Im a tall long fellow
What you have to look at here is the application of the weapon, the way I see it most of us (myself included) will be using their weapon in a survival/escape and evasion type situation, when the Zpoc finally hits. That said an assault rifle would probably be the best all around. It is lighter (both the rifle itself and the ammo which can get very heavy), most assault rifles are also accurate enough to get the job done, and because they are usually shorter they can be used in multiple envirorments with equal effectivness. My preferred weapon is the Noveske, they are expensive as hell, but they're built like a bank vault door and can shot the wings off a nat.
I'm only humping one rifle/carbine. as with you, I will make do with what I've got..
I would say either or, depends on your fighting style mostly.

For me, I would like to use my M1 Garand for mostly mid to long range combat, but I keep it with me mostly because I know how to handle it and use it...of course i have yet to be tought on how to field strip it to clean it proper.

Sure it may be "heavy" to lug around, but I have walked across-n-around my property (some 8.4 acers of land) for several hours with the rifle over my shoulder (or in my hands) and a loaded bandoleer across my chest, and...it doesn't feel that heavy at all...sure my bones and muscles will start to feel the weight after a while but I'll learn to live with it because there will be little to no room to bitch about it's weight if you got several fresh ones runnin' at ya.
