Also, the sholin spade or the peybar. Maybe the baseball bat. (Wooden)
Try checking your spelling next time, Shadowslains. As for the question, the katana is FAR overrated. Anyone who's even held one (you Shadowslains) should know that you can't behead in a single strike with one.
the katana and machete need to have alot of power to slice a head off the crow bar if large enough can bash some ones skull in in one or two hits thats my main meele weapon
Tempered steel shovel. Can be used as a tool and a weapon. Those things are meant to take punishment and that translates into a durable weapon. Wouldn't have to worry all to much about it breaking on you. Not meant for slicing limbs off of zombies but effective in smashing the skull and the brain.
What type of handle? The wood ones generally have connection issues with the head after some punishment, and the fiberglass ones (aside from being more fragile) don't withstand cold very well. However, my biggest problem with them is the balance. Wooden ones have a good balance, but since fiberglass is so light, it's a rather unwieldy weapon.
I'd go with the wood handles definitely. As for the shaft of the shovel having connection issues with the head of the shovel. I've never had any problems with the shovel I've been using for years, its been beaten to hell and back. If you can split rocks with a shovel I'm confident it can shatter skulls.
russian infantry shovel made to withstand mines blowing up and is light wieght plus they used it for stealth kills all the time in ww2 big we dont have guns issues back then
This thing:

No matter what, I'll always stick with a crowbar or a machete.
*COUGH* trench knife *COUGH*
i need that.... xD
From my perspective melee boils down to two strategies: defensive and offensive. A defensive weapon will utilize reach to allow you to either escape or remove their threat, so you can go in for the kill with another weapon. An offensive weapon is going to be two-handed to be able to get past the skull and damage the brain, so generally close quarters.
Best is going to depend wholly on your skill with the weapon. Someone trained with a Bo staff could fend off multiple attacks and damage their limbs to escape. A weapon like an axe or a flail has such a wide arc and delivers killing blows, but allows them you get close when you miss. Since we do not get "points" for killing Zeds, I would favor defense every time. A polearm/staff type of weapon or a one handed blade/axe and a riot shield would be my choice.
