That date is based off of the classical Mayan calendar (more accurately called the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, since other cultures used it) completion of a great cycle of 13 b'akt'uns (or 144,000 days x 13). All this would mean is that for the first time since the development of this calendar, the long count date of 13.0.0.0.0 (which is August 11th, 3114 BCE) is repeated. Thus another cycle equivalent to 5125 solar years starts.

Mayan scholars do not know whether the classical Maya ever attached anything more significant to this date. As for 2012 being some sort of apocalypse or "world change," there is simply no evidence from either classical Mayan civilization or any of the neighboring societies that used the same calendar.

I dunno.

the 2012 phenomenon doesn't seem to be the sort of thing terrorist groups would be into (unless Marvel is behind them).
