I mentioned in another thread that there are so many skills we would need to survive a Zpoc or any kind of massive disaster. How many of us can sew our own clothes or cook our own foor? Okay, we all know you're gonna have to know how to shoot in order to stay alive. You're gonna shoot zombies and you're gonna shoot food. Now how many know how to field dress what they shoot? Can you skin that critter? Can you tan the pelt? Once the ammo on the store shelves is gone you're gonna have to reload your own. Do you know how to make a primer, a lead slug the proper caliber or how to make gun powder? We talk bicycles, cars, ATVs, Motorcycles and even horses but how many of us have used these things? Riding a bicycle is almost a given but some folks never learn to drive a car let alone a motorcycle, ATV or snowmobile. How many of us know how to cue a horse? How many of us know the proper use of spurs? What's the easiest way to get feathers off a bird you shot and managed to dress out without ruining it? How many can plant a garden? How many know about hydroponics? You may not have access to a garden plot and may have to grow food on a rooftop in a home made green house. Do you have these skills? Do you know someone who does? Can you get enough people together who have different skills that can be used to survive?

What state you live in. Very inexpensive land in Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks. Wife and I bought 20 acres in Missouri about 3 years ago.
Brrrrrrrrr.
Come to SoCo, we need you here and land is cheap! I am picking up another 5 acres on tax sale for $125.00. Normal price is about $3-5K per 5 acres.

High desert co, 330 days of sun, 25 inches av snow (I think less cos we didn't have that much last year & 9 inches av of rain per year.

And Papa, the Great Lakes and Miss are going to be dead zones once the Corexit gets sucked up via backflow from the Gulf.

And we have lions and tigers and bears - oh my!
Where you been hiding Tori Love. Thought you got eaten by some zeds.

Southern Colorado sounds real nice until you mix in the folks coming out of California bringing their troubles with them. Same goes for Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. In my opinion they have ruined California and want to flee to places they believe are "freer". The only problem is they want to bring their rules and regulations with them changing every place they go to what they just ran from.

Politics sucks. Maybe we need a cleansing of the breed. A culling of the weak and stupid. (This statement is in NO WAY directed at anyone on this forum)
I am in a valley protected by mountains, Prime. No one WANTS to live here. No jobs, poorest county in CO, 99% of property is off grid - would cost too much to bring electric in from 20+ miles away. Schools suck, economy sucks, locals are nice, low low population - like 2 people per 5 sq miles

PERFECT place to be holed up if you need to. LOL

Nope, didn't get eaten - did get bit and survived (LZ should have the video I submitted yesterday approved shortly)

Been 'ranchin'" - since I came out here permanently earlier this year, lots to do to get ready for winter 2010 - still no running water, but have septic in. Solar system hopefully will be in by Oct - 3 wind generators up and running w new battery bank.

Hope to have goats, rabbits and chickens before winter and I have my eye on a nice little Arab mare that keeps getting cheaper and cheaper as the summer goes by. Just need to get the solar electric fence running 100% and she can have about 300+ acres to roam. She'll have to settle for a shed made out of pallets and scrounged fencing and maybe a llama for company.

I'll be back writing soon - work picked up, so make hay while the sun shines. Right now I am designing a straw bale addition, a solar thermal cell using 55 gal water barrels set in old tires and a utility room that utilizes a gray water system.

No rest for the weary! hahah

(and yeah, I am all for a cleansing - where'd all the rational thinking self-sufficient people go????)
Sangre de Cristo Mtns?

Wife and I looked there a few years back. Not enough water for our liking. Don't want to depend on the Government for essentials.

I've seen how they build those Bale houses. Very intrigueing. Are the wind turbines giving you enough electricity? It's something I'm thinking about for our Missouri land.

I was able to obtain two horses earlier this year. One is a 13 year old Arab Gelding. The other is a 6 year old Appendix Quarter Horse Gelding. Both were free. The Arab is a little small for my liking but the perfect size for my wife. The AQH is huge. about 16-2 and 1300 +/-. I still have to train the AQH under saddle
Yes, that is one of our mountain ranges, but we are in the valley. Course it rains IN the mts every day, not so much in the valley. I know one guy who is up there using just a rain water catchement system. He has a 10000 gal underground cistern. He said if a drought came, he'd have enough water stored to last 1.5 years (just him, he's a batchelor)

You can hit water at 60 feet in the valley and probably could do a sand point for animals at 20-25 feet. Most wells go down 100-125 just to accomodate for dry seasons. Once you have a well, it is no diff than MO or PA. (grin)

A friend out here built a post and beam bale house. Very energy efficient, but he used too much cement for my taste. I'd go with adobe stucco since there is enough clay in the ground here. Or maybe papercrete if we could find enough paper.

We have 3-400 watt 48volt generators with a 4400 watt pure sine wave converter, so we are running on 110 vs DC. Mainly b/c the mobile home we have was wired out for AC, not DC. With the right combination of battery bank, we could power 2 1400 sq ft homes using an AC system. But, wind is not always constant, so we are going to add 1200 watt solar system since it is sunny almost every day. (NO HUMIDITY IN THE SUMMER!)

I can let you know our sources for both, which we got for cheap compared to what "retailers" want. We bought 2 used gas generators: a 10K and a 5K got deals on those.

I also found a new back up 2800 watt inverter for $125. (1 is none, 2 is 1)

Electric is sufficient, but we only run the fridge at night and then put a couple of ice bottles in it for daytime. It is a regular fridge, so it gobbles up electricity. With the solar, we could run it all the time.

I also invested in low watt appliances, like a small electric "george foreman" which is great for making breakfast, grilling sandwiches, etc. Next is going to be a bread maker and electric coffee maker, so we can ditch the propane. I have an old fashioned wood buring cook stove ready once the addition is up.

The horses sound great. They have free ones out here too as soon as winter gets closer (gotta love craigs list) - however, some being offered are "companion horses" ie too old or lame to be ridden or have health problems.

Yeah, your QH is a brute- lol (my mare was 14.2 and about 900 lbs and was really stocky.) I'd have to have a step ladder just to reach the stirrup! hahah
I see a lot of generators up for auction at military liquidation sites. I have a 4500 max generator here at the house for outages. Right now I'm doing my research. Like I said in the email, I can retire in 7 years. If we make it that long..
well PRIME, i smell an informational video coming on....so when are you going to post it?
Plenty of horse training vids on Youtube..
yeeeaaah but whenever i mean to look up something productive i change to lady gaga parody vids
Well the New Jersey hunting test teaches basic skills about how to kill, skin, and field dress a deer or bird. I know a few people who can make fire without matches and they are my close friends. As for knives, my friend is an expert in that field. I am ready for the basic things and have yet to learn the rest. I plan to.
