i was pondering on the use of flashbangs for anti-zombie tactics. seeing as how zombies rely more and sight and hearing than anything, it made sense (to me anyway) that since flashbangs affect these two senses, that they could buy you vital seconds in order to escape, reload, attack, etc.

wat do you guys think about this?

p.s. wasn't sure this was the best category, but o'well lol.

Well it sounds very possible, flashbangs mostly use a "shell-shock" type of attack also. So like if a human is hit by one they do lose both sight and hearing, but the reason they work well is because they confuse the target.

I'm not saying it won't work, just test it before field use.
Flashbangs would be completely useless. Zombies rely mostly on smell, so they would still be able to attack you just as affectively blind and deaf.

But I would find it hilarious to watch someone try.
Disagree.

Most people would agree that smell is not the main sense used by zombies. In a later post Aizu says that they use all senses equally. I think this is more plausible. I doubt a zombie would be able to smell you from 100m away... but i'm sure they'd be attracted to your movement.

I think they would work, if only to blind them long enough for you to get around behind them or out of sight. That would confuse them.
The zombie does not depend on sight like humans do. Hell, there are some zombies that have eyes completely decomposed and they STILL hunt well

They can hunt just as well in the dark as they can in the light. The flashbang would not confuse them at all. No grenade would work, as a matter of fact. Grenades tend to utilize the affect of shrapnel. They might shred a zombie up, but they won't stop it, unless it manages to hit the small target it has to to destroy the zombie: The brain

Avoid grenades all together
It is probably true that zombies can use all their senses and will not suffer greatly from losing one sense but they are still homo-sapiens at the core. They have no greater abilities than that of humans but perhaps less distractions and a stronger focus on their goal.

Take out their sight and hearing (even briefly) and you stand a better chance than if you don't.
take out sight and hearing, and they will still be able to smell you

there are zombies that STILL hunt effectivly with missing parts that would normally hinder their abilities

Flashbangs would only work against you
lol, it isn't the shrapnel that 'kills' a zombie, rapidly expanding gases exerting a huge amount of force + zombie = brains like a thick soup. and flash bangs would work, zombies still have a human anatomy, they don't have senses like animals, they can't smell you from 5 blocks away and they can't just tell where the living are. They will be blinded by the flash and the shock of it may disrupt not only their hearing, but it may destroy their sense of balance
This is assuming the brain maintains it's normal functions...A bright light causes the eyes to constrict to prevent too much light from entering thus creating a "blinding" effect. A quick flash for a human causes blindness, but for a zombie, if the brain doesn't react and cause the constrict, it may not effect them at all.

I have never experienced this, but if you wear glasses you have...think about having your eyes dialated for an exam. Without sunglasses you'd experience massive headaches, but that doesn't mean you can't see, just that it hurts...What if you didn't experience that pain...
That's a good point, there's a good chance that it may not blind a zombie.
One can only hope...but if your good at what you do, you could pull off the whole, I am legend security system deal, buy yourself time to make your escape. Honestly, I think I'd rather be in the country side playing catch and release...tag one, release it back into the wild, see how long it takes to come back...
Im sure it might blind and deafen them but their primal instinct is to kill and feed so i think they would just keep running regardless of what they can see or hear.

I've only seen smell used once and that was following a blood trail, i carlessly left.
I think the noise and concussion of a flashbang would distract them. I wouldn't rely on it until you tested it though.
