Ok I hear a lot of people on these forums talk about using melee weapons. I personally believe that anyone believing their going to go around bashing zombies with clubs, and machetes has been watching far to many zombie movies. The only thing like this I would carry would be a crowbar, and not so I can bash the brains out of the dead. Im going to carry it for use of entering a building, houses, or anything I need. A good crowbar, or a smaller pry bar is worth its weight in gold. It will easily pay for its weight in my pack.
So I want to hear everybodies ideas on what I consider a really bad tactical plan.

Permalink Reply by Laz on March 5, 2011 at 12:20pm That's what I mean, if you don't need them then why have them. Home defense or self defense is a total none issue here so.
If you need a gun then you can legally have them. I don't see where there is any issue here lol. Maybe it's just a cultural thing, for example I wouldn't move to a country where anyone can own a gun just for shits and giggles.
People can't handle the idea of don't drink/do drugs and drive here, I certainly wouldn't feel happy about any old person just buying a gun just because they feel like it until maturity/general intelligence is a lot higher and drink driving (for example) numbers are virtually none existant.

If you are forced into being nomadic in any way there is no concievible way that you could carry the amount of ammuntion required to make the firearm of much value. I know, I know but I will just load my own shells and blah blah blah. Now you are in a position of having to carry all of the needed materials with you too. On top of that, most people could shoot a gun reasonably well without any training, but maintaining it and making their own supplies for it is another story all together.
I will take a baseball/cricket bat or similar item, reliable and easy to come by.

If you see a zed you should avoid at all costs, weapons realistically should be used to get out of sticky situations/hunting/dealing with other people. In a zed-apoc any weapon that you are proficient with (even if it is a baseball bat) should be fine for most of these. If you can't hit a sheep with a baseball bat then that's just darwinism I guess.

Permalink Reply by Colin Shriver on March 5, 2011 at 7:46am I think we all can agree that a firearm is a better anti-zombie weapon than just about any melee weapon. But it has two drawbacks: ammo is finite (and as the apocalypse drags on, harder and harder to come by) and they're loud - like ridiculously loud, and that's out in the open. Shooting a gun in an enclosed space is a great way to go deaf, and without your hearing you're pretty well screwed.
Now if the point you're trying to make is that picking a fight with a melee weapon is dangerous and stupid, you're right. But not carrying one just because they aren't as good as guns is just as stupid.
