Virus progression possiblities: feel free to list you own ideas.

Ok most of us have thought about this for years. I have watched countless zombie and other outbreak movies and have come up with a system I like but that might not work for every one.

Stage one <Insanity>: The outbreak of the z virus caused those infected to start acting strange, paranoid. They started to believe that everyone else was out to get them. At this point it is hard to tell they are infected at all. As it gets worse they start to lash out at those they see as a threat. Surprisingly they do not seem to attack anyone already infected and will even work with them to get people they do see as a threat. At this stage contact with bodily fluids has about a 90% chance of passing the infection. This includes but is not limited to any normal activity that would spread HIV, flu or colds. This stage lasts about two days with the noticeable behavior lasting about the last 6 hours. Often family members and people they come into contact with in the normal routine of their day are infected through casual contact. This explains how it spreads so fast.

Stage two<Feral>: At some point they will fall into a sort of short comma. When they awake they will have lost their humanity and are like the 28 days later infected. In this state they can not be talked to or reasoned with and will try to kill anyone they can reach. They will often start to bleed from the mouth and sometimes the ears and eyes as they near death from the virus. The parts of the brain that controls the organs starts to shut down. Pain drives them even more down the road of insanity and they start to ignore wounds that normally would slow them down if not stopping them cold. Three hundred pound men will run on broken ankles as long and the ankle will still support his weight. This stage can last anywhere from a week to a couple of months. What causes the wide time frame is unknown. In the end the victim will start to weaken and slow down. A combination of blood loss and the organs shutting down finally drop the infected and it dies.

Stage 3<Zeds>: Within minutes of death the body rises from the dead and starts moving again. All movement is slowed though sudden very short bursts of only a few steps are possible if they see someone close enough to grab and bite.

Stage 3 <bitten>: Anyone bitten by an infected or a zed bypasses the first stage completely and within hours falls into a comma. The over all health of the victim will effect the outcome. A reasonably health person will rise as a runner and will still be alive in all aspects. They will act the same as any other stage 2 that went through stage one. Progression from there is the same as well.

Unhealthy victims will die and then rise as a zed.

I think u nailed it LOL good job
The flu is going to mutate in some sort of incurabel VHI, the sintoms cant be like the movies, they can be ina zombie fatal state, but not to bite or try to eat poeople, i think the outbreak will start in southern asia, africa or southern america
works pretty much the same way with every zombie movie I've seen.

If "invasion" infected count as zombies then Stage 4 victim's skin becomes moist, when the flesh dries, the eyelids will usually fuse shut and the skin will become fused with anything it was touching when the skin dries, the flesh takes on a yellow colour and the moaning will sound like it is coming from underwater. this stage occasionally bypasses stage 3, so it is not uncommon as to see people fused to bedsheets, shrouds and coffins
What about the healthy ones ?
are they going to be infected too and become Zeds
or just die laughing ?

Anyway, keep up the good work, soldier....
No the healthy ones go through the runner stage 2
But skip the crazy contageous stage 1
I wonder, are there will be a person which has been bitten (or half-eaten) but successfully, just died as human being then and not turning ?!?!? .....
****Whadda lucky guy ! ****
in theory it is possible... if the person is bitten savagely below the skul on the back the neck .. if the bit succesfully damaged the spinal column thereby stopping the brain funtion passing messages down the spin and to the rest of the body... The zombies basic functions would not happen...

ANother way this is possible is... if the person bitten was resistant to the virus and was bitten in a way that an artert or major organ was so severly damaged that the person bled to death or otherwise...
Just thinking... convulsions are by nature scary to experience and also to watch so perhaps ....

"Stage 3 : Anyone bitten by an infected or a zed bypasses the first stage completely and within hours" starts displaying signs of a fever.... eventually (time dependant on their level of healthiness/immune system) the person will just hit the floor and have what will look like an eppileptic fit...... The over all health of the victim will effect the outcome. A reasonably health person will suddenly stop convulsing and rise as a runner and will still be alive in all aspects. They will act the same as any other stage 2 that went through stage one. Progression from there is the same as well. An unhealthy person would pass out during the fit and wake up a few minutes later as a zed...

What do you think?
I like this. It adds another level of fear to the mix. convulsions or seizures(is there a difference?) scare the crap out of people. Nice idea. This could also include some sort of frothing at the mouth via an Alka-seltzer for movies.

Now if you wanted to add a more Romero feel and still keep with this progression you could say that everyone has been exposed but that for some reason a % of the population has a resistance (not immunity) to the virus and never go though stage one at all and only hit stage 2 upon being bitten.

although it ws never intended to be this way from Romero you can see a stage one in the early onset in Night of the living dead with Mr Cooper. He is obsessed with everyone doing as he says and anyone not doing so is a threat. Romero never had and never will have runners but you can still get an idea of what it might look like starting out in stage 1.
The idea of Resistance is cool... an addition to that is a "carrier"...

There are some deseases/conditions like for example Thalesemia where you can carry the gene and not ever suffer the symptoms. But pass it on to your kids.. then there are some people like me who will catch the flu but suffer little or no symptoms and still pass it on to those in the house So perhaps the people who have a resistant gene could theoreticaly be carriers which also helps with the "how did it spread to quickly and so globally?" question....

For example people who received the dodgy vaccine or came in contact with the virus in some way at the begining did not become infected and turn, instead they became carriers and unwittingly passed the virus to the people they came in contact with... some of those might also be carriers but mostly they all turned... : )

Foaming at the mouth is a MUST!!! and for those concvulsing alone or receive no help from those around the occasional scene of them biting off their own tongue wouldn't go amis!! THat would be awesome to watch.....

In the remake of Return of the living dead theres a pregnant woman... she gives birth to a Zombling.. (thats just what i think they should eb called lol) I reckon a good twist on that for a movie perhaps would be a baby born with an imunity to the virus Because although the mother had not been bitten the father had been bitten but never told the mother and so the baby is not only a carrier of the virus but also has an immune system that has developed a way of fighting the virus altogether and irradicates it from the blood stream...... This baby could be "the messiah" the one fortold in all religions blah blah blah... So the mission of the group is to find the baby and keep it alive long enough to get it to the LAB ... in an attempt to use it's blood samples or even stem cells to create a real vaccine or at the very least an Antivirus/antivenom ... The vatcian might try to ban it but hey that will just make it more appealing to viewers lol
Aren't all the visus progession listed in Max Brooks' The Zombie Survival Guide.
Here is a link to it if you haven't read it

The ones he liked are listed there but saying they are all listed is wrong. It's a fictional virus so it could take any line of progression. And I have the book. :-D

Clair did you mean the Dawn remake? I never saw a Return remake but in Dawn that happened.
