yes try to keep blood and gore off of your body

Exactly what i was thinking! But what if there is a virus that starts out like a flu, what precautions should we take?

If it's like the flu we are screwed, they still haven't made a cure for the common cold. Sure they sell plenty of prevental med's and they say for everyone to get a flu shot every year but it's no sure thing. I'm hopeful there might be a cure someday for such illnesses but like Chris Rock said years ago-There isn't any money in the cure, there is only money in the medicine.

isolation - the virus cannot infect you if you are not exposed. hygene and air filters in my truck and makeshift blood spatter suits using duct tape and whatever vinal or pvc material is available

Good ideas guys, to double check on this and for the sake of preparedness when it all does go down, i found some useful tips. Take a look and tell me what you guys think.

1 .Eating a wide variety of fresh, wholesome foods packed with powerful vitamins and minerals is the first step to ensuring a strong immune system. Vitamins A, B6, C and E and the minerals zinc, iron, copper and selenium are critical for maintaining strength and immunity.

2. Garlic is known for its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties and can prevent infections from taking hold and spreading. A daily serving of two raw garlic cloves will provide you with the bulbous herb's healthy benefits.

3. Mushrooms have been found to increase production and activity of white blood cells, improving your chances of fighting off infection.

Fruits!!! Lots of fruits! .....and Flintstones vitamins!

As a general rule...it's going to be luck of the draw no matter what you do.  That is not to say that you shouldn't take precautionary measures, they may work, but they may not.

First, try getting the hell out of town to a secure location.  A camp, a rural setting, somewhere that you will likely not be disturbed, then count on someone else saying "Hey, remember that camp we saw that those people own by that lake we like?  Let's go there with a whole bunch of guns and hold down the fort!"  If you are lucky, you'll beat them there.  If you are unlucky, you will beat them there and then they will assault you with everything they have, because now the camp has supplies in it they can use.

Ultimately, you are screwed, no matter how well equipped you think you may be, if you are not mobile and out of the way, just count yourself out now.  Even folks who have well defended mountain hideaways with an arsenal of weapons will eventually have to leave for some reason, supplies, repairs, whatever.  We rely too much on non-renewable resources and most countermeasures need electricity of some kind to work well.  Countermeasures that don't take the same amount of energy in sweat equity and in my estimation there are few enough people who have the know how to pull it off...

In conclusion, buckle down, take what precautions you can, stay the hell away from people and hope beyond hope when you stick your head out that the illness has run it's course and that it won't return...plan on about 5-10 years before you do so...

I prefer to focus on what you can control instead of what you can't. An attitude like "ultimately, you are screwed," is, ultimately, self-defeating. The will to survive is must be cultivated and nourished - not disparaged. While it is true that we do all end up dead, it's important to focus on what you do with the time you're given. If all you do is mope about how hopeless the situation is, you're probably not long for this world. If, however, you wake up each morning thankful for life, eager to do what you can to improve you and your family's situation, then I think you'll find that attitude contagious and amazed at what you can accomplish.

Remember that in this scenario, your only prerequisite for survival is time. The longer you hold out, the higher the chance is that you will be there when the grid comes back up, and water starts running, and when we begin to reclaim the planet. Zombies will eventually rot until they're muscle-less skeletons and pose no threat. At that point, we've won. This victory will come at a terrible cost of millions billions of lives, but it will be victory nonetheless. We can make it, but we need people like you to believe we can. When the smoke clears, and you look in shock at the smoldering ashes of civilization, be not afraid. It is up to you to assure that all the destruction, all the sacrifice - everything we've lost since it began - is not in vain.

Have faith. We will survive. We will rebuild. We will persevere.

hazmat suit?

Ok so now the vote is absolutely isolation and keeping your immune system up as a precautionary measure, Hazmat suit is also considered as precautionary. So maybe this being healthy stuff might actually come in handy...until you need supplies!

I agree completely with Adam. In simplest terms, the best way to avoid "catching the virus when it all goes down," is to avoid it altogether. Since people will be the other carriers, stay away from other people. If you choose geographic isolation as well, then wherever your retreat may be, make sure you only take with you people who are healthy and uninfected. This is not to say we be cold and compassionless, just cautious. Isolation is indeed the key. If someone you love is infected, keep them isolated. This will protect you (and the rest of us who aren't infected yet) and them (from the zealots who no longer see infected as humans). God forbid the worst should happen, deal with it when it does.

Staying healthy and fit is an obvious tool of preparation as well. It's no guarantee of survival, but I'd much rather be able to run a mile without being winded when I need to. It's important to remember that in this scenario, you are truly on your own. Police and military have all fallen back to defend their own families and homes, and no one is coming to save you. Self-reliance is paramount. Since you're reading this, you're one of the smart people who is doing what they can to prepare. This means, more than likely, you'll be in the position to help other people. After stockpiling as many beans, bullets and band-aids as you possibly can, the next step is to offer assistance to other people. If one thing's certain - there will be a lot of people who need it.

Stockpiling multivitamins is also a very good idea. In a best case scenario with your own farm full of poultry, rabbits, and a lush garden, you will still be missing essential nutrients that you won't get from anything else besides vitamins. Personally, I'd stay away from mushrooms just cause I don't know enough about which ones are good and which ones melt your liver.

Never forget that in a best-case-scenario there will be no power, running water, or working government for maybe a decade. Be ready to defend yourself, not just from a virus, not just from zombies, but from the hordes of refugees fleeing the major cities as they burn. These desperate souls will do whatever it takes to survive, including turning to cannibalism. Keep your head down and lights low. Don't advertise your whereabouts or that you have stockpiles. It sounds bad, but without proper planning, you may well find yourself overrun and as a meal without ever coming face to face with the virus or a zombie.

Above all, pray. Pray that He's still listening. Show mercy, show compassion, appeal to Heaven and be worthy of survival.

If, at first, it is airborne, avoid contact with all people, use a gas mask, and have one of the little air filtration machines in the house. When it becomes fluid transmission only, then simply avoid storage bodily fluids.
