The best weapon is whatever you personally have a skill in. If you are experienced with guns don't use a sword. If you are a medieval reenactor dont use a gun etc..

 

Best 'no experience needed' weapon for me is a pick axe handle-light enough not to take you off balance but will kill in one swing and designed to take punishment.

for a melee i would go with an aluminum bat, close range i would go with one of my .22 pistols(ammos cheap, easy to find and in bulk) and my ruger .280 for a ranged weapon

My personal preference is a splitting axe for mid range.  Bow for long range, and a mace for close range.  Emergency weapon is a 9mm.

I'd go with melée before I went with guns because they are just extra weight when you run out of ammo. I would want a scythe because it's long sharp and deadly and if ever find yourself in the middle of a horde just start spinning and swinging before they get to close

I Think it all depends on what situation you are in. If I could I would use a cross bow since the bolts can most likely to be reused if and when possible plus you could be silent and at a distance rather than close up about to get bitten if you don't smash the zombies head in. But then again it depends if you are stuck in a large crowd of zombies I sure would want a gun with multiple shots in a magazine rather than reloading a cross bow. Even then a melee could be used To keep quiet so you don't draw attention to your self if sneaking around for supplies or keep a melee weapon as a back up. Or whatever is available will work out just fine, and hopefully the gun stores wont be pick clean
