I think if you come across the funds for a katana, you are better off spending them elsewhere. There are plenty of other blades out there that will work just as well for a fraction of the cost. If you go to zombietools.net and look around, you'll see that they have some good handmade blades. They have one that is similar to a katana if you like that idea.

Don't go to zombietools uless you are only looking for a wall hanger, it was discussed a lot in an older thread:

 

It says on their website themselves they don't hand forge their stuff or even heat treat all of them.

2) For some of our blade models, we will then heat and hammer the blade into shape.



Additionally and more importantly 5160 steel for swords is terrible unless a huge amount of skill and care is used with the heat treating. The fact that they say that only some of their weapons are heat treated is worrying for the price they are charging and shows that although they do look awesome, they don't actually have a lot of skill in metal craft.

Also they have never supplied weapons for testing and the only review i can find on youtube is this, by one of the actual makers of their stuff

Conclusions:

1. The blade is terrible and cannot cut through the (relatively small) tatami mat properly.
2. The people who make the blades can't be trusted to swing them properly, and thus cannot be expected to make them properly.

don't get me wrong a lot of their stuff looks incredibly cool, I just wouldn't ever trust one in a SHTF situation ..... or tatami mat cutting situation lol

i will be more comfortable with a BFG9000, a giant robot and an amulet of infinite ammo and my woten wurld uber teleporter....

 

but since i cant have that, i will be depending on my own skills of what i know and psychology that i have learned to cope with this, preperation of physical is only half. guarantee ONE of YOU can and will go crazy for the first five minutes of realization with a 50/50 chance you will pull through, 12% will be happy enough to get careless and your odds will drop substantially until you have a near death experience that brings you back to reality that you are mortal, and the rest will have the world pause around them as they let it all sink in that this is the moment that it all happens, with that crucial amount of time anything could happen until your focus comes back in. the ones who will actually have all of this mentally prepared but will die because they will think everyone around them has done the same when they have already been in the other categories...and then there is the emo that dies by panicky made in china Katana usage...i will laugh when that happens

 

oh and i would love a ray gun...dieselpunk look.....
