Welcome to the Z-Day, where the dollar is as dead as the people.

Now that the world is in shambles and there is no money, what is the new form of currency?

Smokes...alcohol...pain meds?

There may not even be a set form of "currency" as such. It would come down to whomever you are bartering with and what they want.
Highly tradable products would be consumables such as food, water, meds and ammo. Also items that would increase chances of survival like shoes, blankets, leather jackets, weapons, lighters. People may even choose to trade in services ie I'll lend you my medical skills if you offer me protection etc.
probably a trade and barter system, if you have ever seen the movie Book of Eli they do a great job of showing the kinds of things people value; blankets, purified water, food, etc.
Trade and barter. The smarter more mobile (vehicle owners) will soon learn to leave nothing behind when scavenging, if you don't want it, someone else might and be willing to trade. Of course a vehicle obviously loaded with trade goods will be a prime target for gangs so be prepared to fight for what you find.
Food ,ammo, meds and clothing are prime things to hoard, if you have a location you plan to stay in and defend, buy a few pair of extra shoes now and stash them. Clothes can be adjusted to fit, a badly fitting pair of shoes will be a pain in more ways than one.
Yea, I'm seriously thinking about giving them up, the money saved won't hurt either
Stop smoking and buy ammo.
I think with paper money worthless we'll revert to a system of trade and bartering, initially on basic survival goods such as food, water medical aid and shelter. Extended survival goods for those who have the basics down would be gasoline (for vehicles), ammunition, and mechanical repair.

When things settle down trade and bartering would extend to luxuries like tobacco, alcohol, chocolate, coffee, honey, sugar, salt, honey, non-native foods, game/live animals, recreational and medicinal drugs, and pretty much anything that can be sold, including people (prostitution, slavery) and labor.

Eventually to substitute value gold and silver would be making a major comeback as currency. Instead of hauling two tons of perishable fresh food around a 10 silver dollars can be use to represent that value.

But currency as we understand, where things have a set value I don't think would return for decades, until nationwide communications can be made and people can actually set a standard and that standard can be communicated instantly around the country.
Currency depends on if any part of Government has survived. If it hassurvived, other then enforcing laws, the remaining government will want to establish an economy based on a common currency. The paper money we have today would be worthless. Even more worthless then it is today. I believe the currency would be more rudimentary and based on the "Gold Standard". Coins either made of gold, silver and platinum or Paper bills backed by those precious minerals.

If there is no government left to attempt to manage and regulate things I agree that barter would be king. You can barter anything from services to perishable goods to precious metals. Anything and everything is on the table. Someone with the skills of a carpenter or farmer or bricklayer is going to have value. But the value is only worth what someone is wiling to trade for it.
Take what u want
Just don't try to take mine.
There is also the value of real estate. If I have a lot of land in an area that zombies don't go, or with fetile soil, I'll be willing to give it to someone in exchange for a portion of the food they make, protection, ect. It all depends on where you ago when it starts. But I hold a lot of stock in the value of land and it will be very useful in the long run.
If there is no rule of law then you have land "If you can keep it". I have land too and I agree, you can allow people to live on your property in exhcange for work and goods but no matter who we are we've got to be able to protect what we've got.
I'd try to barter services and necessities. I would use the steam powered engine in my garage that I built as a hobby/science experiment to power an alternator that I could hook up to 12 volt car batteries. Other survivors could bring their dead batteries to me and I'd recharge them for a fee payable in silver coins or for trade. I am an avid fisherman so I would also try to catch enough fish for myself that I could trade my surplus.

In lew of any tradeable goods, I have a moderate collection of precious metals. I collect mainly pre-1964 "junk" silver coins and 1 oz bars but have some gold in case I need to carry something of a lot of value and relatively light weight and bulk. I like silver because it's easy to purchase in small denominations and is easily tradeable in value for disaster necessities.

I would trade ammunition as a last resort for several reasons. In a Z-pocalypse it would be one of the most valueable items. Unless you have the machinery and components to make reloads, ammunition will be very hard to find. Ammo is necessary to protect yourself from not only the Zeds but any unscrupulous people you might cross paths with. Ammo can also be used to collect food by harvesting game and feral animals. My last reason for not liking ammunition as a barter item is that once traded, it can be used against you.
