What if you were the leader of your nation? What would you do?
I thought this might be an interesting topic.
Assuming there was a breakout of the zombie plague in a city within your country, what would you do, as leader of your nation to contain the spread and/or prepare it for the coming zombie attacks?
Most people here are Americans, so I'm doing mine with respect to an outbreak in Italy.
If I were the Prime Minister of Italy, and an outbreak occurred, for instance, in Venice, I'd request Parliament to concede to the government the "necessary powers" to deal with it. I'd then immediately send troops, tanks, planes, and ships to quarantine the city in an attempt to prevent the spread of the infection.
In a news conference, I'd give a detailed explanation of what is known about the plague, and inform the nation of a declaration of a state of emergency and the necessity to proclaim martial law.
I'd then announce the building of a wall to keep the north of the country isolated, and to stop the contagion from spreading south should the quarantine in Venice fail (which, personally, I would expect). At the same time, I'd have special refugee camps established in the mountainous areas of the country in order to effect an evacuation, should it be necessary. And in these camps, aside from sheltering refugees, there would be training led by the military to give everyone basic knowledge of what to do, and to allow people to be prepared in case of attack by zombies.
Then I'd set aside at least 30% of the budget toward researching how to kill the zombies and/or find a cure or vaccine to stop the spread (if possible).
Of course, any and all travel to and from Italy would be canceled, indefinitely.
And the final step would be to heavily fortify the islands (Sicily, Sardinia, Lampedusa, etc), should the above fail and the peninsula be lost, to allow whoever possible to withdraw to the islands.
Any of y'all have ideas?

First of all, I'd quarantine the infected city, probably by building a wall. If there was a way to detect the infection (dogs, etc.) I would filter out as many survivors as possible. I would stop all incoming and outgoing travel. I would also try to spread out the population to safer levels and house each group in a "base". I would make sure each group knew how to defend and take care of themselves (farming, making medicine, etc.). I would also establish a "secret base" where scientists and disease experts worked on making a medicine to either cure or prevent the zombie disease. However, things are unlikely to go so perfectly, so I would deal with problems as they came up. I do know I, and anyone on this site, would do a lot better than most people, just because we would be willing to admit that they were "zombies" and not just "crazies".

I've been following this thread but haven't commented until now. What if I was the leader of a nation, what would I do? I would close my borders, purge the plague and wait it out. No one gets in the nation. You leave you stay out. I would protect the borders with the full force of the military. If you are infected you will be housed and fed until you turn then you will be euthanized or finished or what ever you want to call it.
If the Nation is lost and in ruins I would gather family, friends military, scientists and normal Joes. I would open bunkers and missile silos. Entry and exit would be strictly monitored. If you are infected you are turned out or euthanized.
All that being said, I wouldn't be a Leader of a Nation. I am who and what I am. When all is said and done and the Zpoc is finished who knows who the leaders will be but I will be one man trying to rebuild the United States of America as a representative republic bound by the Constitution.Hoepfully I will be one of many.
