Non-military member here with a question for you all.

The Zombie Apocalypse hits and martial law is declared, at some point it is assumed the chaos that ensues causes all forms of government structure fail. Before this I would imagine the US Military to have a heavy presence on our soil. At what point does the US Military disband? Will it ever? Will the Marines stay united and become enemies of the Army if they meet in the street, like gangs would over turf disputes? What is the role of the citizen militia?

I think members of the military are in the most fortunate circumstances in the event of a zombie apocalypse. You have the resources, training, and camaraderie to not only fight off the zombies but to also maintain order against gangs. I don't doubt the military would have its share of deserters, rogue Commanders and opportunistic pirates, but for the most part the US Military is our only hope of saving humanity. The average American citizen will be helpless and likely an enemy before long.

But where does your allegiance lie? Who do you put first? You, your family, or your duty?

Well for one, members of the military are not that fortunate given the fact that they would have to hold their ground unless told otherwise. Also, conventional tactics are drilled into each soldiers head during basic training to the point were it becomes instinct. Unfortunately, conventinal tactics are useless against the undead, and it would take some time for the soldiers to adapt, while civilians, can adapt faster, having a blank slate and all. I think the military would remain united with the exception of the Texas National Guard, which would, along with the citizens of Texas, probably form their own nation.
My allegiance is to the Commander of the United States Marine Corp, which means i serve Obama at the moment. Watevr he says i do. My allegiance will not falter. I do not like the man but i swore an oath and i am prepared to uphold till i die
oaths of enlistment declare that you will uphold the CONSTITUTION, and obey lawful order of the president, not allegience to Obama
Everyone will have to make that judgment when the time comes. Make whatever promises you want now, reality would drastically change your options. As for Cpl. Sanchez and immortal, I don't know what oath you took but mine was to bare true faith and allegiance to the Constitution. AND obey all orders of the Prez and all officers appointed over me. Orders are orders until they are illegal orders.
yeah that's what i said- its to the constitution and leaders, not a specifically named personality like OBAMA
If memory serves me right it was Roy Boehm (The father of the Navy SEALs) who told Prez. Kennedy "Sir I didn't vote for you, but I will die for you."
or the old saying " I may not like what you have to say but will die for your right to say it?
The way I see it, the Oath is a list that we are to follow. We protect the constitution first and foremost, and then follow the orders. I also believe the Oath is worded the way it is because it is assumed that the prez will act in accordance with the constitution and not waiver from it nor try to change it. If the prez acts in a manner that would destroy it, then in my opinion he becomes the "enemy" and must be removed. I'm sure a general officer or the SECDEF would relieve him of command at that point.

I can understand an oath and everything, but there is no reason to die pointlessly. Troops were sent to Iraq to topple a government and find weapons of mass destruction we found no WMDs and we oppled the government in three weeks, yet, we stayed there for almost a decade and for what: terrorism. I can understand fighting against terrorism. I understand going to Iraq for an immediate threat against the U.S., but threat was resolved and we still stayed. Once I'm in the military, I will fight terrorism with a passion, but there are millions of places and people all over the world that are just as dangerous as al-qaeda or the Taliban, are we to purse them, too? We can barely keep our heads above water in the current economy.

I only bring this up, because I think the president acted outside what was right for the U.S. Since you swore an oath to protect the Constitution of the United States, I believe it is not only your job to take orders from the president, but to know when the president is wrong and to act against those orders in such case.

I'm don't mean to say that it was pointless for those who gave their lives in Iraq. Sorry if I offended anyone with that comment. I think a more appropriate word would be "unnecessary." I really do think what happened in Iraq was completely unecessary. We shouldn't have spent as much time there as we did. The U.S. has plenty of enemies, should we go fight them all? Should we nuke North Korea and invade Pakistan, just because they bad mouthed us. It all just seems so unnecessary, thats all.
i say the military and marine remnents will lie on different coast trying to kill and help everyone. worst case senario they go corrupt and kill inoccent civilions my alligence as of right now is wanderer but if im old enough before the zpoc im joining the marines
