now, i wanna know what yall think would be the rounds to stand the test of time. what do you think will be here after everyone spent most of the rounds on earth. granted, i know alot of you may reload your own ammunition, hell i use a 5.7 so im kind of stuck reloading my own, but eventually the powder, brass or projectiles will run out and youll be stuck trading off your stuff for some ammo. what do you think will be most common? what do you think would "cost" the most trade wise of those common rounds?
I heard somewhere that .308 is the most common ammunition (presently). In a ZPoc I suspect that this may put them a bit ahead of the game at the beginning. I think that the reloaders will be the ones in good shape in general, as Prime mentioned, so long as they can find the resources to reload with. I suspect that .22 will be the most common ammo though because so many people consider it generally useless (which I personally disagree with for a variety of reasons but I digress...). It seems to me that the most common ammunition types will be the ones that are least likely to be used.
That said, I think that you will likely see a lot of people revert to more primitive methods to continue their war-like behavior and save the ammo for A.) Major engagements or B.) survival/hunting. Of the common ammo types, I would suspect that .308 or 30-06 will stand the test of time.
As far as trade goes, that's a tough question to come up with a reasonable answer for. If people wanted me to trade my ammo to them, it would have to be a pretty sweet deal overall. Something like "I'll give you this mega death ray for that box of 30-30, thanks.". Of all things in a ZPoc my ammunition would be the least likely thing I would trade. Now, if I were to trade with someone for their ammo, again, that would likely depend on how I am actually doing and if they had ammo I could use. It's worth to me is going to change depending on my own circumstances. However, there are more uses for gunpowder than just bullets so trading for rounds that the other person cannot use could be mutually beneficial.
All in all, this is a great question because it seems likely to garner a bunch of different responses depending on what an individual's personal value of such an item and also lets people wax on a bit about it...great stuff.
I think the amount of ammo will depend on the type of rifles that are out there. There has been a massive rush to buy AR 15 and AK style rifles since Obama was elected. The people buying these rifles are demanding more ammo for them. There will always be the steadfast hunting rounds. I'm betting on a glut of 5.56, 5.54 and 7.62 ammo. I don't put everything on the bet though. I load my own. If possible I might be inclined to build a stronghold around an ammunition factory.
For those who aren't following the trends, it has taken 2 years but the run on sporting rifles (ARs and AKs) is slowing. The suppliers are finding more rifles on their shelves. The prices are dropping again and you can get the same quality gun from a small company as you can from one of the bigger named companies. Rifle sales have leveled off but handgun sales are up at record levels. It might pay to invest in a carbine that shoots pistol rounds.
well i would have .22lr, 5.45x39, 5.56 nato, 7.62x25mm, 7.62x39mm, 7.62x54r, and a pile of obsolete black powder cartridge calibers of ammo lying around. except of .22lr the modern calibers above typically comes in a convenient sealed inert gas filled metal can, perfect for long term storage. Its also cheap, caliber such as 7.62x25mm is like 10 cents a round. If I had the money and storage space, I would be buying it and stacking it deep, while its cheap.
most common for trade would be a mixed variety of old military surplus people like me bought pallets of cheap, stacked in the basement or in a buried cache and new military calibers that would be found wherever zombies and the government clashed.
