Just some thinking:

The classic undead zombies, would they eventually just decay and "die out", so-to-speak, themselves? Would they rot and eventually "resolve themselves"?

rotting to the core ... definitely, maybe ?!
PS.but not if the infected frozen in the snow or ice, it just "sleeping or in a coma"...
they would peter out slowly but only if they arent making new zombies and it would take years for them to decay enough to stop functioning completely but the decay also depends on the type of virus that caused them
The environment would be the biggest factor. A desert would turn zombies into jerky within a few weeks while a rainforest might keep them hydrated for a long time. However, just the act of moving, wrestling with a victim, or any other kind of exertion causes muscle to tear. Its the healing of those tears that build up new muscle for us living humans. Zombies dont have the benefit of healing, so after a few months of constant motion, I'd be willing to bet their legs would all but fall off. After that, they would drag themselves into paste soon afterwards. Of course, if they do go dormant when not feeding, they might last much longer.
yeah i agree as well but where i was going with my comment on what type of virus it is is more coming from how max brookes said in his book that the solanum or however you spell it would keep them from rotting as fast by killing a lot of the bacteria that feeds on dead flesh so if a virus is like that then the flesh wont rot as fast but if its not it will rot faster and so you know dead flesh rots much faster in a rain forest time climate hence boot rot and all the many many more diseases that come from tropical climates than dry climates
I never cared for the idea that a virus could cause the dead to rise. Viruses need a living cell to replicate in. I feel more comfortable with the parasite theory myself as it does already happen in nature to a degree. I could also go with a bacteria of some sort.
It would take a long time but I believe they eventualy would. I don't think bones could walk? I know animals woulden't eat that so you would have to pray that temp and weather eats away at them faster then dead air.
i think water disolves te virus slightly, so if they were, say, in scotland, the snow would weaken them and the cold would eventually make'em fall to bits. I'm so going to Scotland on Z-day
The swamp zombie can take up to 25 years to decompose. The time spent out of the air filled atmosphere has an encaptsulating effect upon undead body parts sealing them from further decomposition. These particular zombies are highly toxic and their smell alone can stop a human in their tracks with wretching repulsion.
