well most of this i can answer from what Glen said when they were at the sewer when he said 'until now i was always the only one who came....' meaning everyone else has just joined on there first time out since the whole thing started and when Angela said the gun was a 'recent gift' in the store just before she picked up the necklas. and i was told why they had the sex in the show...something about a baby in the comic........

I have yet to see episode two at this point and I have read few of the replies on this thread so if I sound a bit redundant it is not intentional.
Based solely upon the first episode, these are my observations:
The acting is good and the story maintains suspension of disbelief. There are a few things I would have done differently, such as , stay the hell away from the city. Granted, if memory serves this is in keeping with the Comic but still...how dumb can you really be? If you are in East Podunk and you can't walk the streets safely without having to shoot a former colleague, then why would you think that going to a major city and poking around the side streets on horseback would be any safer? Also granted, he was told it was a safe zone...did it look like a safe zone? Yeesh! I can get past that though, I consider it to be more realistic than the "If I have enough guns and ammunition" contingent in the Zombie fan subculture. I'll be interested to see where it goes.
I am glad to see a more character driven zombie apocalypse story. Again, so much of the media out there that creates zombie content tends to focus on either A.) Big guns and explosions or B.) Campiness. Personally, I am tired of both. He had all sorts of guns on him at the end of the first episode and what happened to them? The same thing that will happen to most of our guns when we rely too heavily on them...they'll get lost in the melee. If I remember correctly, I may have seen on the season preview that he manages to get his big bag o' firepower back, and clearly firearms are a well represented category in this story but it is also clear that the characters are of more importance than the visual effects...I was more engrossed in looking at all the military equipment just laying around and trying to imagine what happened that the people there left it...
All in all, I am very excited to see the rest of the series...bravo! I mean, AMC!

Well, in the comic books you realize that Rick is the kinda guy that actually thinks about the things that no one else really pays attention to, like the fact that a 'safe zone' would be surrounded by the zeds, and he would inevitably have to cross their paths getting into the safe zone.

Bill & Bravo. I think that you are both right. I would have to watch it again, but I think what was said that there is a refugee center there, not that Atlanta was safe. In addition, if he told that it was safe before communication blackout, the few that he saw just getting to the Atlanta (I guess urban sprawl was just "Peachy" in Atlanta) should have been a big wakeup call. Unfortunetly, he hit the snooze alarm

*meh* I am just a big softy. Just like my comment on Xombiedolls picture with the kitten. I can see a man drawn and quartered and go oh well. But, put a pet in jeopardy and its like oh, no you don't. LOL. It bothered me that the horse bought the farm.
The plot was to put Rick groundside and have him get to the tank. This could just as easily been done by the horse rearing up and throwing the rider. They even hung a lantern on the fact that "it has been years since I have done this" (Paraphrased) and then the horse gets the hell out of Dodge. Same Result.
But, my method does not give the "ick" factor. It is not my thing, but enjoyed and expected by others and I want the show to appeal to a wide range of people so it gets good ratings and we have it around for a while.
So, on this Veterans day. The horse died heroicly doing its duty and will be remembered,
