I have been formulating my strategy in the event of a Zombie Apocalypse (mostly for a first person journal style story i am beginning to write).  I was wondering what the general consensus is about how groups of Zombies move around.  I mean - do they tend to stay in the cities where they started?  Do they roam around in packs looking for food?  Or do they just mill around and wait for food to appear?  It seems to me that there is no intelligence behind their movements, but there still might be patterns of instinct.  Which of course leads to other questions like - how far away can they smell or hear a human?

These questions arise because I am curious that if a small group of people were to clear out a small town to inhabit, would they have to be on constant alert to not attract Zombies from a city 50 miles away, or simply protect themselves from the occasional random encounter?

Anyone's thoughts on this would be appreciated.   Thanks

Well, they're attracted to odor movement, sound and sight. I figure if something is moving, doesn't smell dead, can be seen and making noise it will have zeds up it's tail end. I'd say their movement is a bum rush with stragglers and strays.
The beauty of fiction writing is that you can make them act however you want. But since you are asking for opinions, I think they wander aimlessly, they are attracted to light, sounds, and smells but their senses are no more powerful than a human's. They can't think so there is no organization to their attacks, they all just go after the target when they see/smell/hear it.

I agree, and thanks for the opinion.  I think they would just wander - always on the move but with no specific destination - until something sets off their hunting instinct.  I don't think they would be smart enough to leave a given city to search for another, even if there was no food.  I DO believe they are single minded in the way that - if they followed a car out onto a highway - they would continue on that highway until something else caught their attention.  In that way they might travel from place to place.

The truth of the matter - unfortunately - is that other humans might be far more dangerous than the Zombies.

Well - this is further evidence for a theory I have been working on.  I have heard people talk about raiding a Walmart for supplies. Personally I believe that a Walmart - in a smaller town - would be the perfect place to set up residence for a small group of people.  Think about it - it would have everything a small population would need to survive - including living space, pharmacy, food, clothes, gear, and would be easily defensible versus Zombie attacks.  If you inhabited one in a mall that also had a Lowes or Home Depot - that would supply all the tools and building materials one would need as well.

After setting up and constructing a place to live in the Walmart - a group could slowly clear out the rest of the town, and begin rebuilding some sort of life.  It wouldn't happen overnight, but it would be a good place to start.

What do you think?

I think Walmart is a terrible place to go, all the food would go bad very quickly, not to mention everyone would go there to loot. Other places will have as much preserved food as Walmart without as many people, most of the places I am thinking of also have kitchens, bathrooms, and living quarters unlike Walmart. What you should think about are places that were built to keep people out before we had too much technology to aid us, think concrete walls. The more open land that surrounds it or is enclosed in the walls the better, you can use it for farming or for livestock to graze. Looting will eventually become useful but by that time it will be seen as scavenging, therefore you want to be close enough to cities so that the drive there to scavenge isn't too long, but also far enough that no zombies of humans could follow you back.
Unfortunately I have to agree to your points.  Grrrrr.  However, it has got me thinking that a school might serve as a good refuge...
A school isn't bad, the older the better. They usually are built out of stone and are more durable rather than pretty.
I agree Zombie would have no reason to leave a city in search for food i dont think zombies have any other ablities beyond a human... I have the reasonable theory that zombies have differant stages te recently dead aka fast zombies, the rigamortis zombie aka immobale and the classic slow moving zombie. I also have a theory that the virus cannot keep the flesh from rotting away
Rigor only lasts a short time. Then they are back to flexible.
