Zombies Would Most Likeley Wipe Out Humanity it They Really Existed, Scientists Say.

Has anybody seen this article from The Telegraph?

My only real problem with the article is that zombies DO exist and they seem to be saying they don't. But at least some actual scientists, who are respected by the larger community, are actually thinking about the inevitable. Though they do seem to be hiding their beliefs behind the guise that they are approaching it as a joke or simply something to amuse themselves and others, I think we all know that they are really trying to get the important work done because they know it needs to be. I say good for them!

Sorry to confuse you, I only meant to use smallpox as an example of viral mutation. If there's one virus I believe that is "closest" to pulling zombies off of the movie screen and into our homes, it's gotta be rabies; Rabies already exists in mammalians. I agree with you all the way when you say "the right disease". Anyways, all of that was VERY informative, thanks! (Finally, someone who acknowledges the possibilities instead of cowering behind their own mortality)
And rabies is a scary disease indeed. Sometimes it appears as if the virus is in itself "intelligent," because it seems ready to adapt and evolve as it sees fit. Some have hypothesized as well that rabies is the "cause" of the now-famous vampire stories of eastern Europe. Imagine a plague of rabies being prominent among dogs in this rather unsanitary era - and consider how many of those rabid dogs attacked humans and infected them.

Now there are rabid men running, and it is said that if they felt aversion to mirrors, they were probably infected, so the "mirror test" was often utilized to distinguish the men with rabies and those without it. It's a very interesting theory that I find quite plausible.

Anyway, it's all interesting to assess. Especially when considering that the Rage Virus in 28 Days Later was itself based on a real virus. It was the Ebola Virus presented in the film, but with a severely weakened strain (because the real one will kill you quickly). I believe it was actually also strapped with an inhibitor because it was initially supposed to control aggression and scale it back. But it mutated, and the inhibitor did the opposite - it unleashed rage instead of restraining it.

Here's a link on the first strain of airborne rabies that was researched by the Deparment of Health.

And one on the newest airborne strain found in Arizona:

Scary stuff.
Highly doubtful, i agree with Prime Predator on this one, where there's a will, there is a way. Ya'know we are the human race, surviving is that we do the best xD
Just found an interesting article from "Homeland Security Today"

http://www.hstoday.us/content/view/8747/150/

Perhaps it was only a coincidence, but in the March 2007 Homeland Security Today cover report, Viral Visions, “a hybrid, genetically engineered rabies virus” was hypothesized that “could cause those infected to become mad enough to want to bite, in the process transmitting the virus.”

Viral Visions focused on disturbing new developments in genomics and biological research that increasingly are providing the potential for new and lethal designer pathogens.

.........

A variety of federal officials who expressed these same concerns to Homeland Security Today more than two years ago reiterated their worries this week, pointing to the very sorts of home basement virology labs that were described in the Wall Street Journal report.

“The ability to create nasty pathogens like your hybrid rabies virus in your bathroom is becoming easier and easier,” one of the authorities told HSToday.us. “In the opinion of many in my field, this is much easier than trying to get enough fissile material to make a nuclear bomb and then being able to construct an effective bomb.”

In the world of these hybrid pathogens, virus-inspired zombies - think the movie “28 Days Later” – are “possible,” a virologist who helps the Intelligence Community (IC) keep track of the work being done in the field of genetic engineering as it specifically relates to virology research and development told Homeland Security Today.

Day-um.
This would be disasterous. Can you imagine how fast it would spread within this dumbfounded society? People who have become numb to their own safety? Then you'd have the assholes who would want you arrested for protecting yourself. Stock up now and prepare.

Not to mention the amount of idiots that would probably attack innocent people in order to take advantage of the situation - criminals, doomsdayers, political factions, etc. It would cause added chaos to an already catastrophic situation. And we all know that such people would undoubtedly show up in this hypothetical scenario.

God forbid.
How hypothetical is it? Those were legitimate articles. All the way back to the 60's with an airborne form of the rabies virus. I don't think it's beyond some "Zealot" from one end of the political spectrum or the other to release this shit. Look at the Anthrax dude and the letter bomb guy. Cripes one was a doctor working for the government with access to all kinds of shit. Both were super intelligent types. Your typical mad scientist?

Fair enough.

I said "hypothetical" because we're talking about a situation that has not yet materialized, irregardless of whether it is plausible or not.

You are right though, they are very legitimate articles that should be discussed. And you're also right about the scientists that committed the Anthrax attacks (when I distinctly recall the government announcing that they were Al Qaeda operatives at the time). Who knows also who has high-level clearance either in the military or in government that might have access to such disastrous material.

Hell, even nations like North Korea (which the Marine once brought up), which have rather sophisticated espionage programs (believe it or not, NK does) could get either information or gain access to the technology.

Hell, maybe even all these virus films are rather subtle ways of telling us what the U.S. government actually knows. That wouldn't surprise me very much.
I'm ready, so i really don't care about civilization..
