Something you have to remember is that, while having an alarm is great, being quiet is way more important. Zombies will have poor vision, and steathily moving from place to place will be difficult with barking dogs. They could make a good last line of defense, but then you would have to sacrifice your friend, and alarm system. Another thing is if the dogs do attack zombies and survive, they are then carrying a mouth and stomach full of infected blood.

I think a well trained dog would be an asset for sure. They have far better senses than us for a start and could be an early warning system. A well trained dog won't go around barking. Unfortunately most house dogs aren't well trained.

I think any terrier could be useful you have to remember that you have a large stock pile of food and that will attract rodents and terriers were used to catch rodents way back when. They tend be very alert so they will let you know when someone is around, plus they are agile enough that a zombie more than likely will be unable to catch it. Larger dog breeds will require more food and fresh water something we are going to be in short supply of.....but then again they could be a possible food source.

hay you guys are on the right track but totally over estimating dogs i beleive that after the first infection most dogs will get rabies from lack of medicine ending up with a dog will eventually be your downfall unless you have found a self sustaining zone in the end pets are a bad idea i love dogs and i think animal cruelty shood be againts the law but after the first few hours of the apcalypse there won't be any laws...
