I've seen a lot of people on forums say they have some big V8 4x4 that will be their zombie escape/survival vehicle. Yup, you can carry a shitload of stuff in them, you'd better carry a shitload of fuel. What happens when the roads blocked? Dirt bikes are a good alternative, especially the ones set up for long distance Paris/Dakar races. Huge fuel tanks and low usage means a long way between having to find fuel. They don't need roads, can slip through otherwise blocked roads( or can even be lifted over barriers if there are a few of you) and are fast enough to outrun most anything chasing it. With a bit of sensible setting up you can carry a lot on a bike, don't go getting high performance /loud exhausts, they are pretty quiet from the factory, leave it that way. A bike is also easy to hide should you need to and can be ridden into a lot of buildings keeping it safe from looters while a car or truck is a dead giveaway. Wear leathers, good boots and a full face helmet and you are pretty much zombie proof as well, I've had a large dog grab my arm and it's teeth couldn't break thru the leather jacket, so a zombie has no chance. Try for older models with a carby rather than injection, it may use a little more fuel but you can fix it on the side of the road without a computer. The old Yamaha Tenere 660's and BMW GS series would be my choice.
Ron believes that the dirt bike is the best. the problem with a dirt bike is the fact that it has a motor. now I am not saying that a dirt bike is bad, far from it. If you can get fuel for it, by all means go for it! But i will throw in my two choices for transport. see what you think:

1) The ATV or Quad. This vehicle is small, good on all terrains and you are able to tie down your equipment and not have to carry it. the down side is it has a motor. Too much noise and when gas runs out... time to walk

2) The mountain bike. The good old fashioned mountain bike is good on any terrain. No fuel required besides labor. Not to mention that it is the only option thus far that I have found, that has the option of carrying it. These vehicles don't need much maintenance and are easy to fix.

Any thoughts?

You have made an assumption that everyone is fit enough to ride a push bike for hours a day, fully laden you'd be lucky to out run a hungry dog let alone a bunch of looters. Yes a dirt bike will eventually run out of fuel, but long after you have run out of energy pedaling up a hill. If you are going to drive a quad you may as well have a car,

you dont need anything special i would prefer a car with a shield in the front in the end were are you going to get anything else and besides in the beging of an out breack its to confusing to set up gear on a atv or motor bike and what could you possibly bring on a normal bike i choose a car
