Lost Zombies

"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle." Sun Tzu

In order to effectively combat the Reanimate(RA) Threat (popularly known as Zombies(zeds,z's) we need to know how they work, what makes them tick, why some anatomical parts work and why some don't.

Topics to consider:
-Effect of the reanimate virus on the neuro-muscular system
--how does (after reanimation) the body compensate for the lack of ATP production, given that none can be produced
--at what level does the nervous system work

-Level of decomp of Reanimates vs. nonRA's and its effect on its mobility and aggression level
--does the RA virus slow down the rate of decomp, or is it something else
--will aggression levels drop overtime

-Effects on the Brain
--what parts of the brain does the RA virus effect
--in what capacity is consciousness effected
--how does the virus compensate for lack of oxygen
---lack of water and glucose for the maintenance of cerebral fluid

-Sensory functions
--what effect does RA virus have on eyesight, hearing, sense of smell, and touch (if any)
--will these senses degrade over time or does the RA virus enhance particular sensory functions

-Reanimate Psychology
--why do RAs crave human flesh
--can RAs be made docile
--do RAs have emotions
--are RAs capable of learning or thinking at any level
---what are the ramifications of such a fact over time

*From these topics, how can one devise more eficent ways of disabiling and destroying these Reanimates

Knowing and discussing these subjects on a scientific level will give humanity the tools it needs to survive, fight, and win this un-winnable battle.

Have you ever thought that the zombie physiology is more akin to a plants rather than an animals.

in what way? Cell structure, photosynthesis, regenerative abilities?

I'm a long way from my biology studies but a zombie seems to have plant like features. Cut of its arm and it doesn't bleed out. No active transport system for blood, maybe passive?
You can prune a zombie down quite a bit yet it still functions.
If the brain dies its destroyed something like the roots of a plant.

I see where that would make sense. But you have to consiter that for all intents and purposes Reanimates are still Homo Sapien (more appropriately now a classified subspecies) So they still have all the same parts as you or I do... the issue is how does the body change after reanimation... but they are still human

This is where I disagree. They were human, maybe they can be human again, I don't know. But are they really human now? They still have the form but they have been fundamentally changed.
They consume without a hint of a digestive tract. This seems to indicate that their tissues possibly absorb materials.

or its a psychological issue, it thinks it needs to feed, therefor it does, even if it really dosent need to physiologically.

Muscular system:
RA's can operate years after their death. An often overlooked question is physically how?

Muscles in all humans run off of Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), these nucleotides are at the most basic level fuel for cellular metabolic function (fuel for cells), they give muscles in the body the power to expand and contract and without muscles would cease function. However, without active metabolic or respiratory it is impossible to produce ATP on a level (if at all) that would motivate an entire body.

I have a hypothesis as to how RAs can function without ATP:
* Z0C1 (RA virus) may have the ability to infect specific glands within the hosts endocrine system and cause them to secrete an as of yet determined chemical, which 'infect' muscle and nervous cells and forces them to metabolize Z0C1 (Z0C1 being a replicating virus) itself as well as (pardon the pun) cannibalize other cellular structures.

Further Study is still required, I await any input, agreements or conjectures

Under this, wouldn't a zombie waste away pretty fast?

It mostly feeds off of the virus which is in continuous replication, it is thought that it consumes other tissues within the body, as well as native bacteriums (which explains why it takes so long to decompose)... but that is only a hypothesis, like i said, need alot more research

study of patient 0 is proving pretty interesting and i will bear your comments in mind, i need to check out what the levels of ATP are like. In respect of plants lets hope zombies aren't to like them as then they would be able to regenerate themselves from just a small piece of their original body that would be way scary

viruses do not replicate without the use of energy. Locomotion is an energy intensive behaviour. How can a bacterium provide energy for this without an active transport system?

good point, I haven't thought about that
