Lost Zombies

"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle." Sun Tzu

In order to effectively combat the Reanimate(RA) Threat (popularly known as Zombies(zeds,z's) we need to know how they work, what makes them tick, why some anatomical parts work and why some don't.

Topics to consider:
-Effect of the reanimate virus on the neuro-muscular system
--how does (after reanimation) the body compensate for the lack of ATP production, given that none can be produced
--at what level does the nervous system work

-Level of decomp of Reanimates vs. nonRA's and its effect on its mobility and aggression level
--does the RA virus slow down the rate of decomp, or is it something else
--will aggression levels drop overtime

-Effects on the Brain
--what parts of the brain does the RA virus effect
--in what capacity is consciousness effected
--how does the virus compensate for lack of oxygen
---lack of water and glucose for the maintenance of cerebral fluid

-Sensory functions
--what effect does RA virus have on eyesight, hearing, sense of smell, and touch (if any)
--will these senses degrade over time or does the RA virus enhance particular sensory functions

-Reanimate Psychology
--why do RAs crave human flesh
--can RAs be made docile
--do RAs have emotions
--are RAs capable of learning or thinking at any level
---what are the ramifications of such a fact over time

*From these topics, how can one devise more eficent ways of disabiling and destroying these Reanimates

Knowing and discussing these subjects on a scientific level will give humanity the tools it needs to survive, fight, and win this un-winnable battle.

I think they have a primitive learning capability. I have seen them search for and enter through unbarracaded windows after their original efforts prove futile thus they have some kind of intelligence in a predatory sense

maybe we could do some kind of maze tests with them to study their intelligence

My experience is that it is no so much intelligence but a lack of resistence. They move along a structure until an opening is found. Water does something similar. It isn't intelligence but physics.
What I find interesting is that moving along some barrier suggests that they do have senses - they feel, maybe not as intensely as we do but they feel never the less and as some one suggested, if they feel then they can have aversions. If they can have aversions then they can be trained.

Yes but I have only seen some do this, the others will keep on banging until the one who was searching broke the window and then moaned a few times

Let me get to the meat of this. I live in the north and have severe winters. Will these damn things freeze solid? This question is critical to our plans for survival. If they freeze then we will make preparations to hunker down till winter. We will then find new food and fortifications to survive during the rest of the year.

autopsy on a zombie specimen showed high quantities of lactic acid in the muscles and high levels of virus in the brain stem the report is attached. The Z0C1 virus appears to be retroviral in origin

The basic question here is how does one generate energy by means other than the use of the normal biochemical pathways defined to present? If you were an microorganism, enzyme whatever all you would need to create would be a chemical gradient of some sort using the raw materials from a corpse. Imagine one or more opposing enzymatic engines which acting in a sort of pendulum-like fashion would alternate having one enzyme's product be the other enzyme's fuel and vice-a-versa meanwhile collecting a small energy credit with each transaction, and of course this would only last as long as the products or substrates themselves do not become irreversibly cjanged to something unusable. Theoretically possible, and would explain the slow decomposition of the subject as well.
