this one will actually be two chapters, one for home defense and the other for on the go defense. as max brooks said in his book it's better to have a safehouse picked out in advance and readied before any of this hits, but realistically how many of us can afford to buy property elsewhere and pay to have it fortified and suitable for long term survival? i think we should come up with good ideas for different scenerios. what YOU plan on doing, whether it's holing up at home or setting out for something stronger. what will we be looking for in regards to suitable shelters? what makes a shelter ideal? not only against the undead but also against bandits and raiders who are gonna most definitely want what you have.
if i woke one morning and seen hollyhell at my doorsteps i would try to get some picture safly go to foxnews.com and send on you report to let the rest of the people know that hell is finaly here(yea). than i would gather my gear and depending how bad it was decide on if im gonna hang in house for awhile or get moving. hell who knows maby i would come on here (lostzombies.com) and put up a post asking for conditions by every one else
The only real thing I can say is:

Stay The Hell Away From People!
In my tetings both old wood fencing and chain link fence combined is good for boarding windows or fortifying vehicles.
im going to ditch my place lay some zed bait and plant some explosives. Drive off and blow the place sky high. Go to any place that hay thick walls and strong doors like old miltary bases. only thing there will be gaurd patoling the walls and door
I don't know what to do. I haven't read the Guide yet. Might though....
fortify your home or have a plan to go somewhere you think is very safe.
My take on this topic is this. Almost everyone lives in or near a city. If you live in a rual area than all the better. Finding an alternate bug out site is eaiser than you think. We all have section of the city that is industral in nature, there are also garages and storage facilities. In my area there is a self storage area that has steel gates and at least an eight foot wall around the whole thing. Now I'm not saying this is the ultimate choice, but considering that most homes today could'nt keep out a determined 10 year old its a viable option.
This is a really good idea. Self storage yards are well secured, usually with high walls, barbwire, and heavy duty gates. You could set up on top of the storage units for some added protection. If you can get into the units, you would have plenty of stuff, if nothing else lots of fire wood. Food would be the only problem.
I would pack the most essential in backpack. Magnesium stick, compass, pen knife, glow sticks, my train flute, sunglasses (the ray bans ;), water bottle, my binoculars and body disposer suit with outboard, the canned food, call the guys about where to meet up and start running.
In my opinion, you want a building with as few doors and windows on the bottom floor as possible, and a flat roof. No more than two or three stories. Barricade the doors and windows on the ground floor, as well as any interior access from the ground floor to the second floor. Set up camp on the roof and upper levels of the building.

If you must leave the building for any reason, reach the ground by either exterior fire escapes that can be raised back up by others staying behind, or lower other ladders down from the 2nd story. This allows you see and clear the area you'll be entering before you exit the building, rather than opening a door and finding yourself surrounded.

The flat roof also makes helicopter rescue easier. Don't forget to make some sort of large message on the roof, letting any potential airborne rescuers know you're there.
If you leave a message it must be dated daily, Survivors 10/16 - Rescuers will not land otherwise because they have no idea how long the sign has been there, or if you have been overrun.
