What do you do!? Stay at home and wait it out, or leave immediatly to find a better position? Whatever it is, you need to act fast and accuratly to avoid becoming one of them. So once agian, what do you do!?
Police Supply/Surplus and sporting goods will be VERY dangerous places. They will be bombarded by people and where there are people there are zombies. Surplus and firearm shops ARE the safe houses of their owners and employees. I doubt they will be entirely discretionary about who they shoot to protect themselves and their supplies. Pawn shops might be more overlooked, often having glass fronts they may be left unguarded but probably not before being cleaned out of all firearms and ammo. Best have your stockpile ready. I am so with you on the go north plan though. Dead things don't move fast when frozen solid.
head to greenland!!! Average temps. is around, I don't know, 31.6 degrees, cold enough to freeze up the human body if not properly covered. The eskimos that live there would also help us.
First thing you really should do is plan now. This is easy for me being in the army, i just keep my feild pack ready and stocked, when i need to go to the feild, boom it's all ready! You should do the same. This is what I have done, I already have a backpack filled with wet weather clothes (hey if you get hypothermia you can't do anything), 2 days worth of water, 4 days worth of food, extra pair of boots (sucks if you don't have shoes), magnesium and steel, 4 8hr chem lights, mirror, lenstatic compass (i HIGHLY suggest learning how to use a compass, very few people know how too) topographical map of surrounding area, shovel (great zombie loboing tool and it's uses are infanite!) and 550 cord about 20ft.
I would also purchase an LBV (load bearing vest) you know the combat merc vests you see all baddies in cheap movies wear? I keep about 12 mags of 30 rds each in it (thats not alot of ammo if you think about it maybe about 10-15 mins of sustained fire) flashlight with red lens (doesn't give away position) 2qrts of water (need to have water on you at all times, believe me) and a poncho. (getting caught in rain sucks)
With that gear, you can pretty much make it anywhere on foot for about 2-3 days, that should be more then enough time for you to get whereever you decide you want to go. Think mobile! You might have a nice safe spot picked out now but always have a backup! what happens if there's a mob of the undead blocking your only route there? Think low tech as well, nightvision goggles and fancy radios are nice, but without electricty there just expensive paperwaights. Wherever you end up heading too, never forget the importance of water! without it you WILL die in about 2-3 days! Food is not so important, you can live without food (albeit in a reduced capacity) for about 2 weeks. And remember where there's fresh water, there is also other people. Learn to be self sufficient, you may be the only person... alive
In the event of an outbreak I probaly wouldent have my ideal fortifications set up, but Id most likely get a vehcile, try for some weapons shops if they're not looted or ovverrun (I have a combat knife and a couple swords I can use for light engagement if nessacary) then get the hell out of town and make a fortified position somewhere in the mountains

You can live without food for 28 days as long as you have water that you have with you and are drinking. You can live without water and food for about 4 days before dying.Going to any type of weapons store or pawn shop will be very dangerous for several reasons. One other people wil be there and there will be fights for supplies. Two:the owners could be barricadded inside and shoot anything that moves.Three:Don't Forgot the most important...ZOMBIES!where allot of noise and people are zombies are sure to be.You should always plan ahead and have supplies stocked in your home.Like people who live in blizard or bad storm weaher know:you should always be prepared for the worse. So have canned good and other long lasting food ready and a way to open the cans! Have boards,PVC pipes; yes pvc pipes.THey can be made as a way to transport water, crude barricade. and even weapons.Someone who is skilled can even set up a communications system using PVC pipes! Always have some sort of plan with back up plans ready at all times. Also have some sort of back pack full with supplies ready for a few days of hard travel.
