open fields: Go in a group, no less then 10, preferably no less then 20 in a group. Never, NEVER seperate, or split up into smaller groups. Have fully loaded weapons (Shotguns, Pistols, Rifles) and plenty of ammo and reserve ammo. Go in, do a "sweep" if you will...then get out

forest: not come upon this scenario, so no advice

light suberban: Good group of at least 10, fully equipped with weapons loaded and reserve ammo. At least one heavily fortified vehicle (ex: Semi-Truck, Garbage Truck, etc.) and food. Have a secure, safe house established before going out... Clear area wanted, then get back to safe house, totally restock, rest, then repeat until total suberban area is clear.

heavy suberban: No advice, only live in a light suberban area...

small town 30,000 to 50,000: basically same as with light suberban area, just with larger members in groups, and instead of a single safe house, perferably make one city block an entire safe zone to work from.

large town 50,000 to 80,000: No advice...

city 80,000 to 150,000: no advice

city 150,000 and up: no advice
The fields, Ironiclly, Could present more of a problem than clearing out a large city. The fact that they can see you in itself is a VERY bad thing. My reccomendation to this would be, depending on the size of the field and the number of infected contained within, you might want to just burn the fields and watch from a distence. Make sure to use a chemical or grease fire to start the blaze though, as things such as these will create more intense flames and more than likeley burn longer than a normal fire would. After the zombies in the field have been burnt sufficantly, get into position on one side of the field, get a long range rifle, an automatic rifle, a handgun and a combat knife (in case the survivors get close to you) and pick them all of. Fields cleared.
1. Open feild: Well it would depend on the situation and people/equipment. If I had say around 20-30 people i would make a box formation with interlieing sectors of fire. If I had a squad (3-6) I would go in a V formation settleing into a line formation when contact is spotted. Solo, i would avoid it like the plague and get some concealment.

2. Forest: 20-30 size. V formation again with 10 people per V formation, send the first formation ahead wait about 50 ft, then send another on hte same pace following. If contact is spotted the 2nd formation can manuver to a vantage point for better fire support. Squad size, V formation again. Solo, slow and quite.

3. Light Suburb-heavy suburb: Clear house by house, i would only attempt this with a very large supiorior force, to easy to die otherwise. Squad size, clear a house and fortify. Solo, run to the woods.

4.Small Town-Large Town: Large force, avoid at all costs, IF i had to enter, a single squad should be sufficient for any endevour with the remaining force to be applied later (IE set up a "safe" area via box formation) For cleaning out the zombies? Level the whole friken place, cost to many lives to take.
Squad size, avoid contact at all costs, find a defensible position and if Hunter Killer was what they where doing, fortify, set traps, and lead zobies into the fire of your teamates=p Solo, i would run as fast as i could away from people.

5. City: Blow it up. thats it, no reason to go in there. get out and blow the sucker up.
Hmmmm, "Zombie Hunting". What a unique concept. I have long belived that zombies, on a certain level, do communicate. We all know that most zombies moan, but is there a difference in their moans when they see the living? Do they not in fact alert other zombies of the presence of the living? Huntng a creature that's sole purpose is to locate (hunt) and eat you seem a bit silly. In any enviroment that is infested by the walking dead, if they know you are there, they will come to you. At the point they start to "swarm", it's just a matter of how you dispach them. If 9 of your friends and you get together for a "hunt" and your all expert shots, each one with 200 rounds, you can easily take on 2,000 dead heads (in theory). All you need is a safe location to shoot from, someplace you can execute a flawless head shot and they cannot get to you (roof of a building, forest observation tower, even a grain silo).

In any enviroment this would work as long as your ammo holds out, you have enough food and water, and they can't get to you.

They will come to you, and keep coming, and keep coming, and keep coming. They don't know how do anything else but hunt you. You are food to them, they will not be detered, they will not hesitate, they will not "rethink" their options.

Say your field hunting, a zombie sees you and starts to moan. It attracts other zombies and they start to moan (that "food over here" moan we all love so well). Zombies will be moving toward you from 360 degrees, all sides, all directions. If you are near a heavily infested area (evacuated city where the dead have taken over), you could end up drawing tens of thousands of the dead (how many rounds are you carrying?).

Major cities will be death traps, the infection will spread so quickly (due to population density) that being able to carry enough ammunition and supplies would be a logistical nightmare. Even if you found a safe place to hold up, once surrounded, ammo, food, and water gone, it would just be a matter of time before you join the ranks of the undead.

Sweeping an area does no good unless you have a way to secure your perimeter. They are mobile and constantly on the search for food (read as "you"). Unless you have taken steps to keep them out of an area you have cleared (big wall or fence), you will have to go back and reclear that area.

Just like poking a honets nest with a stick, going out looking for zak may not be the best of ideals.
As far as an open field goes my idea would be as follows:

First the area needs to be scouted and assessed. You also need to know when its just not worth clearing. Now my plan would be to have 10-20 individuals with scoped rifles of their choice climb trees on the edge of the field. These individuals would have to be quite affluent with their weapon of choice, at least able to dome a zom-bag clear on the other side of the field. Now, have someone drive into the middle of the field you have set up shop and start blasting your music of choice. If your marksmen in the trees are stealthy enough, then the zombies should head to the "bait" car. Continue as long as light permits. Your exit strategy should be well thought out as well. From your scoutings you should have a rough idea of how many zeds are within earshot of your music and how long you will need to be posted up.

One exit strategy I thought of would be to have the bait car make a pass around the edge of the field gathering whatever zombies are left. Then they would proceed to lead the remainders away while the marksmen could safely get out of the trees and head back to base.

Just a rough draft of a plan, and critiques are always welcome
I have a hard time with the idea that we should just bow up large cities. There is so much culture, technology, and preexisting architecture. It would be painstakingly slow and dangerous, but so will rebuilding somewhere else. The threat will NEVER go away so long as one remains so the option to even try is more a quality of life one.

Every large city at some point tails off into a smaller city, a natural barrier, or a rural area. Ideally you can use the landscape to create a bottleneck. If the option exists to move in quietly and not engage, I would use that time to dig some ditches about 20-30yds apart in the field of fire. Demolition teams to bring down buildings to give a better field of fire or force the Zeds to go where we want them to. Snipers would pick off stragglers that move to our flank. Wherever you engage on the outskirts, would eventually pull most of the horde. That early phase before they get clustered on you will control your fate. Once you are set up it becomes an endurance/ammo/daylight race. The ditches slow them down, as do the piling bodies. Above all else though always have an exit strategy.
1. Open Fields.
These areas are extremely hard to "clear" as they are quite simply by definition OPEN and thus zombies can come from any of the after mentioned locations but none the less.

Equipment needed:
At least one lightly armoured vehicle ( Something as simple as a strong cage will do, speed is the key don't slow yourselves down.) that can easily outpace runners.
Flares
Gasoline: Possibly Kerosene if it can be obtained. 20 Gallons, used to start fires.
Weaponry: All long range really, as leaving the vehicle(s) would be suicide
Team Size: 5-20 ( Any larger becomes too hard to transport)

Description:
Day 1
Move your armoured vehicle(s) in the basic centre of the open area. Set off the flare gun. This will attract zombies for the basic premises of the field as the flare can be seen from all directions. As the zombies approach, open fire ( From the vehicle) at all approaching zombies.

The key to surviving this tactic is to keep the vehicle moving out of the range of zombies, any vehicle can out pace the runners, the armour is a precaution for when things start to get intense. As the numbers will surely rise quickly. Keep moving and keep the fire up as the zombie's numbers rise.

Eventually you will be over run, this is unavoidable. At this point use the 20 Gallons of fuel loaded onto each vehicle and pour across field ( Can be done by simply pouring in tracks of Vehicle) and light. THis should help thin the horde.

Make your escape, simply drive past the range of the zombies, killing any really persistent runners that give chase.

Day 2:
Return to the field with refreshed ammunition, and repeat process, each day this is repeated less zombies should react to the flare as the population of the area fades.

Once this is over and zombies are no longer responding to the flare. Use the vehicles to sweep the field attempting to find any stragglers, finish them all.

After Clear: Move on, there is nothing you can really do about zombies returning to an open field as it is ( As formerly stated) open. Area can never be completely deemed safe but the flare tactic can offer short refuge to build shelter or a base from which you can assault a surrounding area.
1 set up a base and send partys to kill and loot while setting upp traps
2 burn it
3 loot, kill, and blow the hell up
4and search kill save and demolsish buildings
5 barricade city limits set up bases sniper setups blow up buildings and try to make a outpost
6 enlist in the military
7 military cleanisng
8military cleansing
