Barricading is the oldest thing known to man that can help stay alive in a zombie outbreak. the best thing to use for barridades is wood: preferably wood furnature like chairs and tables. or you can use just plain wood to nail onto doors and especially windows. just make sure that it is sturdy or it will break easily. Also, have a backup plan like in case they get in. If that happens you can use the place where you can get in and out of the house easily. Dont go in an attic or downstairs. save it for when you really need it. Until then dont box yourself in there when not absolutely nessesary. Also if they do manage to break in, you have to be prepared. You can never have too much weapons. So that plays a role in where you set up your barricade like in a police station or a hunting shop because of the guns and ammunition that could last up to 2 to 3 weeks. Also try to stock up on food during the outbreak preferably as much as you can carry. Another thing to keep your barricade intact. Do not stand right in front of them because if you tease them, they will get more determined to get to you. It's like hanging a cheeseburger near a fat guy where they cant get it. Try to hide when possible because then other zombies will come and it will just make your situation a whole lot worse. So if you are going to shoot them to take the pressure off of the barricade, look around to see what you have to work with. If there is a counter that is facing the entrance, take advantage of it. crouch down and punch a hole into the counter to stick your gun through, preferably a sniper rifle. Now you can shoot the zombies without drawing attention to yourself.

Wouldn't a metal or steel baricade be more sucessful or even zombie proof?
True but if access to such materials is, shall we say for the moment, restricted then wood is pretty reliable, particularly heavy wood types, mahogany stuff, and large oak things...Church pews even!
AS I have stated, above in support for your...thing, wood is good, but ZombieBane has a point...Why not steel or a type of metal, better yet zombie proof (if available).
I don't think zombies would take kindly to being shot either...and not all of us have a sniper rifle...How the hell are we supposa' get one if there are Zed's stumbling around outside...See I'm not all onesided...I like to be on both!
you have to think abotu how you would make the barrier though, with wood you can do somethign solid with just nails, but with metal you will have to start breaking out welding equipment and if you're not trained you will most likely either hurt yourself (and there will be no mroe doctors and hospitals) or make something that is not strong and will fall apart
True true, you have made a very good point, even so though: how the hell do I find a sniper rifle...
well a 'sniper rifle' is just a rifle with optics, if you're in the US most places in the country will have a rifle with optics for hunting/shits and giggles
cars are good sources of metal... take off parts and nail them to the front of your barricade. Metal braced by wood...
But what if you don't have a strong enough nail or it can't penetrate the metal, I'm not going against you just, being philosophical...don't worry
Try this experiment.
Lock your self out of your house, now try to get in.
If you can't get in the non-thinking zombies can't either.
Good idea man!
So, I thought of this idea a while back, and I'm pretty sure its the smartest thing I've come up with in a long time: attach a mattress to the outside of every door. Basically this will make your barricades last a lot longer. Plus you get the added benefit of watching zombies hilariously bounce around :)

Also, for a good zombie eliminating tool in a holed up scenario, all you need is a bowling ball or cinder block and a strong rope. As the zombies gather outside of your "fort" simply go to the roof with your heavy object on a rope and drop onto zombie domes. Reel in, and repeat.
