Someone posted this earlier, but I figured I'd elaborate. Hell, I've got plenty of time on my hands tonight.

So in your opinion, when choosing your place to live safely with the circumstances presented to you, what would be the best place?

I would say in the country would be the BEST location. Close to a small town with a population of one thousand or less (of course). Even though you're still outnumbered, chances are that there are/were survivors there before you. They either became zombie food, or they fought back, outnumbering the undead a bit. Either way, I'd say it'd be better to live on the outskirts. Even in the dead center of a small town like that, you would be in constant danger of one of those one thousand creatures attacking you. Not just zombies either. Crazies, Raiders, etc.

If that small town housed a prison, it'd most likely be on the outskirts of town. The prison would be best suited. Those fences are very strong, there's usually like two or three fences to get through, it has numerous rooms, a mess hall that would be stocked extremely well, sometimes a library, a gym to keep yourself in shape, an armory, generator, fuel for the generator somewhere, an infirmary, plenty of space for people, blankets, clothing, etc.

You could use the prison grounds to grow your own crops during the growing seasons. Not to mention, the building itself is like a fortress. There are also guard towers you could use to spot enemies trying to infiltrate your protected safehouse.

That is just one of many places you could hole up at. Give me your thought and opinions on this. Thanks!

I have always thought that the moutains would be a good place to be , zombies that are just wondering will probaly tend to follow the path of least resistance so will wondrer down hill , depending on the moutains like we have here they are pretty rugged and easily defended so radiers and other evil doers wouldn't be to much problem . also the water sources high in the moutains tend to not be contaminated  but can be easily purified if needed , there is plenty to eat if you know where to look . and with some pre planing having ample food stocked up and fire wood it might even be fun

Anything away from large cities would be good at first. Once the large flocks of people known as the golden horde start leaving the metro areas for the more rural ones they are sure to bring trouble. If the opportunity is available the safest place for your stronghold is an oil rig. I know this sounds far fetched but if you think about it it is miles off the coast and is raised off the water by smooth slick stilts. If you have to stay on land then you would definantly want to find something multi-leveled, but nothing more than 3 or 4 stories. That way you can implement obsticles as you work your way upward incase of a breach but are still able to escape once you reach the roof. Never go for the basement, it might seem like a great place but once you are breached the zombies are coming in the way you need to go out. No matter what you choose as a HQ you have to remember that your external defenses are everything, this would include anything that keeps anyone or anything out.

I agree with this idea. The oil rig is a very good idea. Tell me more. Elaborate on it.

I'm heading for the mountains. Those old, empty missile silos out on the plains would be good, but its to easy for the zeds to get to it.
good luck finding an old, empty missle silo-the government does a good job of hiding them. You want my advice? go North.
I will stick to the Canadian up-woods areas. Im not talking Quebec, im talking 100 miles NORTH of Quebec. I own a little secluded cabin there, with my own mini-wind feild. I dont live there all the time, but in the summer I travel up there. Its a three mile walk through a huge forest from the nearest road, ten miles away from the town. The entire house is self-suffitient. I can survive up there indefinatley, as long as the wild animals aren't scared off. If I see a group of deer running away, I will follow them, because there is only one reason they would run: the dead are on the way. The snow will muffle my foot steps, the trees conseal me, and if I need to, I can climb up a tree and hide. Im used to cold temerautres, 20 below zero is normal to me. The only problem I can think of is vegitation. I suppose that in the summer I could make a garden, and trek back to town. My own little house is the perfect strong hold. It may not be impenatrable, but it's so far away that It can't be found easily. if they can't find me, they can't eat me :)
Thats why I'd head to the mountains. Find a nice spot thats not easy to get to for a human being, that way I know it would be damn near impossible for the zeds to get to me. Its just good anti-zombie terrain. Even if the zeds could get through the terrain, it won't be many. The cliffs and hills would echo any noise I make all over the place, making almost impossible to pin-point where it came from. The melting snow traveling down the mountain would provide water. Vegetation grows all right there, but I don't think it would grow as well as it would on the plains.
A zed climbing up a moutian is pretty easy to knock back down. Set up traps so that when a trip wire is pulled, a mini- avalanche is triggered and knocks down the zombie(s). they're too stupid to grab onto a tree branch, so they will tumble down a long ways. Also, for an escape tactic, use dynamite to make a big avalanche. Zombie hoards struggling to climb uphill will be pwned in the face with a hundred or so boulders heading at them. Will kill some, disable others, maybe miss one or two. But thats where guns come in handy. Try to pick a mountain in the rockys. There will be more zombies, but warmer climate and easier to find food.
Thats exactly what I was thinking of doing.
Except for the avalanche part, I don't want to bury them in rocks just so someone can dig through them and get their ass bit. Curiousity killed the cat.

I sat  in the one place I thought I could find safety. It was a bank vault in a half assed place I called home.

I am safe but the air is running out...

Oh yeah this is my last will and testament, I leave everything to my cat. I hear them scratching, I itch too I wonder if there is food in here?

I am running out of pot and the air is getting hazy in here, I wonder how my cat is

oh yeah I hear banging what next

I should have bought water who knew?

just wheee waiting for this door to unlock, should be any day now

it is a big shiny  door with locks on it

I think I will lick it

Afternote:

Upon inspection this man was found sitting in his closet wrapped in tinfoil smoking a bong of what our scientists can only assume to be his own feces.

Remember Citizens:

There are no such things as zombies or aliens, your government is in total control. Keep your doors and windows locked at all times. Stay tuned for future enlightenment.

I sat there on my pillow staring at the horde. Don't get me wrong there wasn't a Horde at first. Just one or two poking their hands over the top soil. Soon there were more, like three or four. It was then that we knew we had a problem.
