I was disgusted with Max Brooks' review of the M16 in the Zombie Survival Guide. The M16 is superior to the Ak47 in regards to zombie killing in every way: It is lightweight, has twice the range of the AK47, and, unlike the AK, it was designed to be accurate. Now although it is true that the AK47 won't jam if left underwater or in the dirt, I must ask, why would you leave your gun under water or in the dirt? That is just poor gun treatment and care. And newer models of the M16 can be used to melee an enemy without breaking. The M16 line of assault rifles should be considered to be superior to the AK-47 in our version of the Zombie Survival Guide.

Here's a question for you though; how many times do you want to stop to clear a misfeed or jam in your weapon while zombies are bearing down on you? I would guess not that often. The M16/M4 style of rifle is so prone to jamming that it's almost as if it were part of the design. With the AK, however, as long as you have a good magazine that isn't misfeeding, you rarely have to clear a jam. When you do, it's a simple sweep with the thumb and you're rocking again.

As for accuracy; I don't know about you, but I don't really plan to engage zombies at 200 meters. At that range, I'm more likely to go with evasion as a tactic. If I absolutly NEED to engage at that distance, I wouldn't trust it to an M16 either, but rather a dedicated hunting or sniper rifle. Assault Rifles like the M4/16 and AK work best within 100 yards. Yes, I know their effective ranges are 800 meters, but I said best, not effectively. The kill box on a head shot (the area easiest to penetrate and guarenteed not to deflect) Is around three inches by four inches. You want to waste ammo trying for that at a distance? Or do you want to get it right the first time?
Now your right that the M16 jams, but that mostly occurs when it is being fired on full auto. And that too is a quick fix if u have received proper training with the m16. And you of all people should know that the M16 can be, and usually is, fired on the semi-automatic mode, so no ammo would be wasted. And please avoid bringing in guns other than the Ak and the M16 into the discussion.
I beg to differ. We never fire on full auto for two reasons; 1) It's a waste of ammo, and 2) the military realized this and phased the M16A1 out for the M16A2 which has no full auto setting. Regardless of the single-shot use, I haven't been in a firefight yet that I haven't had to clear a weapons jam. It's a simple fact of using the M16/M4 that it WILL jam on you. There are, of course, two methods of clearing it. The first is the six-step SPORT process; Slap up on the magazine, Pull back the charging handle, Observe the chamber for blockage and round extraction, Release the charging handle, Tap the forward assist, reengage.

Then there is the other method; first stoppage pull back on the charging handle ("rack") and reaquire target, if the stoppage persists, lock the bolt to the rear, strip the magazine, look in the ejection port and if neccicary remove the blockage, rack the weapon twice to be sure, reload the magazine, chamber a round, reacquire and reengage.

The more spacious upper reciever of the AK helps prevent these sorts of things, as well as preventing jams from debris such as dust and sand, and from carbon buildup. There's a reason the AK is the single most copied assault rifle in the world.
i have to respectivlty disagree. Although i do lean in favour of the AK i think it really depends the the type of environment/ terrain and type of work you plan to be doing. I think both have advantages and disadvantages and i think all of them should be listed so the reader can determine for themselves witch weapon they prefer
Simple answer to all (or most) of your problems...The AK jams less than the M16, now I don't care what you think...but I would take the non jamming over the acuracy anyday, and more bullets is better, cripple a zombie or kill it, plus the AK has a wider range of ammo that you can put in it, or rather a wider supply of it...not that it matters anyway, I still wouldn't go with a gun unless I knew the chances of a Horde were high, just a shovel and a large knife...I'd use my knowledge to win...guns are mostley for the simple...No offence but I do preffer medievil weapons to modern...There are to many problems with modern weapons that could easily be fixed that no one can be botherd fixing...So there!
I would be more than happy with either of them by my side.
