Ranged and melee go hand in hand, but how you use them is the crucial to you surviving. If you had used guns before or not, if you are strong, etc, etc...

I don't have a rifle with a bayonet, but I think those would be the best 'combo' weapon to use.  I would not have to switch between ranged and melee, saving precious seconds my life may depend on.  And as a bonus, if stabbing them in the head doesn't get the job done, just pull the trigger.  : )
I would also like to add my opinion on just melee.  It's good to have a last resort melee weapon but each zombie head you smash costs you a few seconds to stop and hit.  Let's say there are several zombies blocking your escape route.  After whacking a few zombies, you've stood in one spot longer than you should and could be surrounded.  My suggestion is to have something big but not heavy (hockey stick for example) with a decent reach that you can shove zombies out of the way with or knock them down.  That way, you are slowing THEM down and have a better chance to escape.  It's really not worth your life to go on a zombie bludgeoning spree, not even if your best friend just got eaten.
this is probably cliche but I have two words crow bar. good reach, tool, sharpish,VERY durable purfect earlier weopon.

A good weapon that is actually in use these days for a similar purpose is a combat shovel. Its actually used by soldiers (or was atleast) to cut into a hostiles and can be used for decapitation or even just stabbing. It is also useful in the random necessities such as breaking a lock, digging a hole to plant crop, or just breaking down a barricade that was left by an unsuccessful survivor. It's traits are fairly well in consideration aswell, they are usually small (about arms length maybe smaller), they are sharpened at the edges of the metal head (basically like a sword), and they often have a pointed edge. Being that its a shovel in retrospect, I would imagine they would be fairly sturdy yet I think they would be hard to aquire and if you look into getting one a military surplus store would be your best bet.
