It depends on your level of experience with sharpening. If you know what you are doing the simple bench stone in a variety of grits it the way to go. If your new to it buy yourself a Lanky deluxe sharpener or a Spyderco Sharpmaster. Either will get you knife shaving sharp if you follow the directions.

Of course it depends on the knife you have too, badly heat treated steel will be a bear to sharpen and won't hold it's edge. How much did you pay for the Bowie?
Personally, if a blade is really dull like you say, I start with a plain old file then a fine file, then a high grain glass/sand paper then a high quality/kitchen industrial quality knife sharpener (like a cook/butcher uses) then put a bit of light machine oil (like you use for a sewing machine) and its good, can shave with it if you wish.

depending on just how blunt it is just remove some of the first steps, normally if you keep a decent edge you would only have to go over with the knife sharpener. But everyone has their own way, I personally never have gotten on with sharpening stones so just do something different.

most butchers will sharpen your knives for you for a small price, couple of bucks etc

50.00 $ and I usually just use the wostof for sharpening so I have 0 sharpening expirience
i say for a tatical choose instead of running into down town or something else just use a rock like from survivor man
oh wait i suggest never using it in a meele fight. use a blunt instrument they cause more damage and are easier to use to kill a zed
I personally use a cheap 2-in-1 carbide\ceramic sharpener that i found at wal-mart. it works and i have cut my self ony my blades that ive used it on by accidentally bumping into them. the were clean cuts and would have been very deep if there were any force used.
