Guns are nice to have in handy when zack comes in force, but if you can's handle a few zeds with a melee weapon, how long are you really going to last?
Either way, though, in the hands of someone uncoordinated and panicking, collateral damage is to be expected. Without knowing what you're doing, the advantages can turn to disadvantages when you accidentally strike yourself or someone else in your group.
Practice is key, and, for guns, that means using ammo and making noise. Melee is the way to go.
Uh, regarding another factor about zee swords: don't forget that decapitating a Zee will end up with you being splattered with its gooey innards, which could lead to infection, especially if you're charging in letting out some Viking war-yell.
Heh. You know that meme, Techno Viking? I just had a mental image of him carving up a horde of zombies with a battle-axe in each hand. At the very bottom, it'd say, "Techno Viking Sez: raves are for the LIVING!!!"
Another thing: as fun as melee weapons can be, there's also the fact that when you're in close, there's a good chance of being bitten, especially if there's just a helluvalot of those undead bastards clumped together. For taking out large groups, a gun is best, at least for thinning out the horde, y'know?
A time and place for everything.
Your out scrounging for food and there is one or 2 zeds in the store, the sword is your friend, it's quiet and does the job.
Large number of zeds...run!
And Paul Supercat..... my guns don't go off while cleaning them, because I unload them first. And a sword will let you down if you don't maintain it. Accidents don't happen, they are caused.
LOL@ survivor927 ... techno viking!

Swords are more practical than guns in so many ways, but I think it'd be a good idea to have at least one firearm with you for emergencies (running into human raiders or something like that), even if you don't actually use it all that often. Then you've got bows and crossbows.

Then there is also unconventional ways of defending yourself.
I.e shotgun "duck-taped" to a pitch fork
metal rod hollow inside jam knife hilt into those drill thru it and bolt it together with screws
Wooden plates filled with nails pointing up ( break/ destroy the big toe or pinky toe you make it more difficult for Zeds to walk or run properly, imagine a entire hallway/s with this)
other examples are Vietnam booby traps- etc
