Chapter One: The Snowball Effect
Chapter One
I remember it as if it was just yesterday..
It was a cool, foggy December morning in Roebling. A small town by most means, not bustling with activity like most other cities or large towns. I took my daily morning shower to meet the day and afterwards I seemed strangely empty inside. I was hungry! Now seemed like as good as a time as ever to stop by the deli and get myself something to eat.
And I was off.
So I did and I took my first few steps only to discover that it was much harder to see than I’d imagined. The fog must’ve only allowed me to see about ten feet in front of me and anything farther than that was no more than a blur of light. Odd. But I had a bus to catch and a empty stomach to fill so I continued out the door. No pedestrians strolled the sidewalks; nor did cars pass me by.
I arrived at Donna’s deli with ten minutes to spare.
Relieved that I wouldn’t have to run to the bus stop I casually entered the store not feeling the need to rush at all. But to my dismay, they were all out of one of my favorite and bizarre breakfasts, a Monster energy drink and two cheese danishes. A bit disappointed and angered, I left the deli and started off back to my house to pick up my backpack.
A moaning sound is heard in the distance..
Unable to see or hear exactly what and where the diseased moaning was coming from, I started to panic. And let’s be perfectly honest and clear on this one fact. Even though I’ve seen every scary movie and prepared for all possible doomsday situations, nothing could have alerted me more than coming face to face with the undead.
I pick up a brick in defense.
The only thing I could cough up was “Hey man, cut it out. I’m scared”. I was being as truthful as I could be at such a time. In all honesty, I was scared shitless. Too many times have I seen the part when an innocent bystander gets mauled by a unnoticed zombie. I couldn’t go out like this. I promised myself this once in my life. Out of pure fear and terror I lashed out at the figure with the brick in hand, sending him falling on top of me.
Pinned down and unable to move I try my best to keep the much larger creature at bay.
As I was fighting for my life something was stirred within me. Something I’ve never felt before. Whatever it was gave me the strength to lift what I thought to be an immovable object up and off me with little energy used. I threw him off me and I scrambled to my feet so fast by the time it was functional, I had already fled down the street towards my house. This seemed a bad idea, even at that moment in time but with such freight stirring inside me, I couldn’t’ve hoped to have put together a better plan. I grabbed my bookbag and sprinted down the street to my bus stop thinking I was almost mugged by a drunk or a homeless person. Boy was I wrong. I hadn’t the slightest of what had stumbled upon me. This incident is what triggered the worst day of my life…
