All of the options here are feasible, but for whatever flaws or virtues they may have, each shares a single drawback: they all cost money. My idea, like most good ideas (at least I think it's good, but I'll leave such judgments to the community), is simple: use old tires.
Tires are free - with minimal effort you can find someone looking to offload old tires that no longer serve their purpose, but will certainly serve ours.
Tires are lightweight - in a zombie apocalypse, one doesn't need a full suit of armor. Protective coverings for the forearms and shins, and perhaps the neck and trapezius area (if the loss of range of motion is worth it to you), should prove sufficient against surprise bites. (As a side note, if you aren't surprised by the bite, you're most likely beyond the help of any armor.) Depending on the size of the survivor and tire, a single tire may provide enough material for all the armor you'll ever need. Obviously tires don't breathe at all, but having hot forearms and shins underneath won't noticeably wear you out.
Tires are sturdy. Fast or slow, no zombie could ever bite through a radial tire - in fact, bites would likely prove less painful with tires than other types of armor listed here, but not go totally unnoticed. Which is good, because even a little pain is a better deterrent than none from the carelessness that made those tires necessary.
But, tires have their drawbacks. The very toughness we want in our anti-zombie armor can make it difficult to cut through them. A hacksaw would likely work. Bolt cutters are another option. Also, wearing tires is uncomfortable. Old clothes, wrapped around your armored extremities, can provide a measure of relief from the irritation caused by the inside of a tire against bare skin.
