If you dont know what either of these is, then look them up on Google images.
The Shaolin spade is an extremely effective tool when combating the undead. it is able to decapitate/ smash the skull of a zombie in one blow. but the problem is that it is rather large and bulky, an army entrenchment tool is shorter but has the same abilities. It also serves as a good tool to use when digging, somthing you will have to do when disposing of remains.
So which one should you put in your zombie killing arsenal in case (inevitably :)) the dead rise?
I think both would be useful to have in our arsenal.
The Shaolin spade is more desirable because of its long range, obviously the point has already been made that its length doesn't lend it easily to transportation and manoeuvrability, but modern versions can be bought that separate in the middle, or an old style spade can be bought and adapted manually.
The entrenching tool also has many benefits, such as its pragmatism in terms of general survival.
The remarks made about the requirement for intensive training, although commonly correct, do not apply so strictly to the Shaolin spade. The nature of the blade allows the design of the weapon to do most of the work, so that any able bodied amateur can effect a decapitation with a swift thrust forward to the neck.
The comments made on Max Brookes' book seem particularly unfounded, considering the fact that the point the speaker makes about zombie heads continuing to bite after decapitation is one that Brookes asserts pointedly and on numerous occasions.
This leads to one of the principle benefits of the Shaolin Spade, as its length allows the user to dispose fully of decapitated but still animated zombie heads from a safe distance.
To conclude, I would argue that both the Shaolin Spade and the Entrenching tool would prove invaluable to the Zombie uprising survivor in a post-apocalyptic world.
The most astute assertion in this entire discussion has been that the entrenching tool is more widely available. In addition to this, widely available versions of the Shaolin Spade are not constructed in such a way as makes what can only be described as replicas completely inappropriate for long term combat or survival. In contrast, fully functioning, durable and effective Entrenching Tool are available at a much easier convenience.
