There's been talk about differnt vehicles and the pros and cons on them but nothing about how you plan to run them. Now I was thinking about a few things but I want to hear you guys & gals have thought of. And remember gas stations will only have whats left after the last refill to the out break, after that they will run out or stop working.

We'll all just use it up in the first week with our tricked out Hummer H2's and ranger rovers...and tanks...and helicopter gunships...oh wait, I think gunships use super unleaded...they may last longer...

Now that's funny, thanks for the laugh Bru

Green algae bio-fuel seems to be the best. I don't know the exact method that goes into making the fuel, but I know you can create oil or alcohol based fuel from it.

If I have grass I have fuel.

ahh yes true horse power. nice

1 horse, 1 horse power.

'Ive been thinking of going old school and make a wood gasifier for my car. its a simple technology that can replace you need for fossil fuel.  but first i really want to make one for my generator. if get it built then i'll think of adding one for the car. for those of you who don't know a gasifier is a world war 2 era method for running engines. you can think of it like a tricked out stove made from 2 or more barrels stacked inside one another. the outer most barrel is where a fire is built to heat the inner barrel which is stuffed with wood garbage anything that can burn and become charcoal. the inner barrel is sealed except for a single exhaust pipe out of which comes a flammable vapor called wood gas run this into the carburetor of a gasoline engine and it will replace the need for gas. and there you go unlimited fuel, so long as you have stuff to burn.

You know if the wood needs to be dried? Thats probably the best option. With green algae, it just replaces crude oil. You still have to go through the process of turning it into what ever fuel you need. In the long run, green algae might serve everyone better, but I do think wood gas might do better in the start.

true but how do you plan on making that stuff once the world goes to shit. do you know how to build that bio reactor they were talking about. do you know how to get your hands on the modified algae that can produce gasoline. do you know how to refine it to make that gas. where are you going to do all this. what materials will you need. that's stuffs fine for right now and may very well be a next gen energy source but after the world goes to shit even if you find one of those places your not gonna have the skills to make it. wood gas is easy can be made by almost anyone whose good at making things and can use almost anything. i don't think it maters for the wood that's making the gas cause that stuff gets supper heated anyway so it will dry out. you will need dry wood for the fire just like any fire but if you have some gas or something to start it wont matter. again as for the material that becomes the gas you can use anything leaves, tree branches, garbage anything that will burn and become charcoal and become wood gas. its like a gas tank an incinerator all in one. i don't know why people stooped using them. if you have a decent generator and a gasifier you can run your whole house with nothing but the waste from your yard,

Does it power diesel or high octane engines? Green algae can be made into fuel that can. Remember it is a replacement for crude oil so it can be used to make any type of fuel. Wood gas would be good for a short time, but in the long run, if anyone stands any chance of making anything better, a new source of oil is going to be needed. It'll just be to hard to get a hold of crude oil and wood gas won't power large transport trucks, helicopters, ships, etc.. I know things like that won't be an issue for a while, but eventually you may need them and simple fuels just won't cut it.

true but your thinking way down the line after everything's been cleaned up and even then just to make that algae your talking about i'm pretty sure that takes genetic engineering. which requires a fully stocked lab and a team of scientist and technicians trained in that field. you can't just scoop up regular old pond scum and turn it into oil. and even if get all that you need a huge manufacturing facility to turn crude oil into gas and diesel and stuff. i'm probably not gonna live long enough to see the world turn back to the point where we can do those things. that's for our children's children to do. i'm worried about how am i gonna get around in the short and hard life i'm gonna have after the world goes to shit. and wood gas can power almost any vehicle from my small suv to big tractor trailers yes I've scene a tractor trailer powered by wood gas. it may not power a helicopter but come on you know how to fly a helicopter, do you know any one that can cause i don't, and i have no need for one.

Algae oil is a good viable fuel. No doubt about it. Let me put this out there though. Just because the SHTF doesn't mean the technology we currently have will go away. In fact there will be a lot less people around to use the resources that are out there now.

The US has one of, if not the richest oil deposits in all the world. We don't drill because of political reasons that I won't get in to here. Someone with some knowledge or even enough intelligence (most people on this forum) to figure things out from manuals, books and other instructions will be able to get crude out of the ground and refine it. Something like the Mad Max movies. The biggest issue would be protecting the rig and refinery not only from zeds but also from raiders. Old energy will be plentiful for those who are left and those who can get it and keep it.
