Lost Zombies

Regarding the zombie apocalypse, I’ve had much time, experience with firearms and human postmortem forensic investigations to come to make the following statement: The Ruger 10/22 (Shoots rimfire 22 LR) should be the ultimate “standard” zombie apocalypse weapon for any army against the undead.

Okay, allow me to preface my discussion with my background. As I’ve stated in my profile I am a neuroscientist, however, specifically I work with postmortem human brain studying addiction, movement & memory disorders. In doing this I have had to work hand in hand with the forensic community, even assisting in numerous autopsies. Some of these autopsies involved trauma to the head from gunshots. Some of these head wounds have been from the 22LR. Interestingly, the rounds typically go in, but due to their reduced weight, yet high energy enter the skull but do not exit. Instead the projectiles bounce around the interior surface leading to a spinning “blender” like action on the brain. Parallel to this I have always been an avid firearm enthusiast/collector involved in reloading, instruction in combat pistol shooting, as well as longrange rifle marksmanship, hunting and gunsmithing. So what right? I am sure that there are many more qualified people than I who will read this blog and say “well I’ll bet I know more than this guy” and they may or may not be right, however, my point is that my experiences have lead me to the stated title of this blog. The Ruger 10/22 (Shoots rimfire 22 LR) should be the ultimate “standard” zombie apocalypse weapon for any army against the undead.
With the weapon pictured (stock unfolded, and on a rest) I am capable of 2 inch shot groups at 100 yds. Easily doing 5 shot ½ inch groups at 30 yds while standing and barrel steadied against a barrier. Simply put this means I can put 5 shots through the darks of eyeballs of a zombie without ever ruining the whites of the eyeball! Using the hypervelocity 22LR ammo one could easily penetrate a human forehead at 100 yds. Points to consider:

1) Weapon is super light/portable.
2) Zero recoil leading one to retarget more zombies faster as well as ease of use regardless of shooter’s stature.
3) Quieter with a lower “report” drawing less attention by others, living or dead. Also, more easy to fashion a silencer to making it even more quiet, however, requiring slower rounds to be almost completely silent.
4) Higher ammo capacity per person. One 500 round brick of 22LR is about 2”x7”x3” which and I can carry about 20 of these bricks in a backpack. This means 10,000 rounds! Try matching this with an M4 which uses 223REM/5.56Nato and you will need a bigger bag not to mention a strong back.
5) Anything but head shots are a waste.
6) Zachs beyond 100 yds are essentially ignorable, and if shooting from an elevated inaccessible (by Zach) it won’t matter. On the ground, one could run and gun if one needs to.
7) Ammo is cheaper to buy and therefore easier to stockpile.
8) Weapon system lasts longer due to the lighter charge of the cartridge, therefore less potential for break down, and spare parts replacement.
9) Weapon system/package less expensive to purchase for the zombie warrior than other systems. A new M4 is >$1, 000, or even SKS at ~$150, (but ammo is heavier and more expensive than 22LR).

Also, I say this owning and reloading for many firearms (I don’t want to say how many) ranging from 25ACP to 50BMG, therefore I know the advantages and disadvantages of the various weapon systems commonly used as Soldier-Standard. Well that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it.

Right on , the 10/22 is a great gun to shoot and ammo is everywhere . in fact any 22 would be great but the 10/22 offers so many after market parts and upgrades you can do just about anything with it , I have a 100 lumen combat light mounted on mine with a foling stock and a red dot sight and mor magazines then i know what to do with . I worked in a gun store for a few years and we built the ultimate 10/22 a few times for fun and they allways turned out really cool . from a sniper rifle to a folding stock rabbit slayer , keep your head down and cover your six

Well, I have always said that a semi auto rifle that fired the .22 LR round would be the best, and as far as I can tell, of that field this one seems to be the best, so I'd rank this the best of the best for zombie defense.

The one thing I've always mentioned is accuracy. I mean not everyone goes out and practices shooting to get better, and when it hits the fan most people wouldnt know how to use a fire arm, even a .22. The biggest thing to me is stopping power, so I'll stick to shotgun. Like u said zombies futher then a 100 yds can be ignored. The thing is if u cant get a head shot, knock it down, or tear it apart. Plus its easier to get a head shot with a shotgun, just point up. a .22 requires aim, and u may not have time for that. A .22 is a good weapon, but jams easily, and u can lose the rounds because of how small the are. But that .22 u got up there is nice

I've never had a .22 jam in my life.
Neither has my brother. He shoots more than I do (approx. 2,000 rounds a week...likes his .22).

I agree with you on the shotgun, but for different reason.

How small is a bullet?
How large is the pattern on a open choke 12 gauge?
What is the difference?
Point proven.

And just for the record...a head shot is more than just hitting your target in the head. It can stay mobile even after penetrating the skull.

i guess it depends on the type of gun, because i've had a .22 jam on me quite a few times.and i'm not sure what point u were proving. And zombies(according to myths and movies) require a head shot to kill it. .22's hit the head and bounce around so im sure it wouldn't be mobile after its brains get scrambled.

The point was the difference in area covered by a single shot.
Shotgun=several feet2,
Rifle/pistol(unless you're using explosive rounds) the area of the bullet.

A zombie can stay mobile as long as the brain stem is operating.
And I have seen people get shot in the head by a 22 and remain mobile. It didn't even penetrate his skull, so how was it gonna bounce around?.

Yes, if the angle at which the 22 lr projectile hits is oblique to the surface of the skull it will morso scratch the surface vs penetrate, however, when hitting flat (or perpendicular) to the surface having enough velocity (i.e. hyper velocity round under 100 yds) it WILL penetrate and not bounce off. This of course requires perfect aim at shoe regions of the skull which are flat and/or luck (better both).

I'm not really sure how you can get more than 100 yds away in a 200 square foot bar.
Or how a barrel against your forehead isn't at a right angle.
The weapon was a .22 LR caliber handgun.
The guy had a concussion, but it didn't stop him from breaking both of the shooters arms.
