I live 45 minutes west of Atlanta, in paulding county(if anyone nows where that is that is a Georgian native) mostly rednecks with big jacked up trucks but suburbs are being built around me. The thing is its still considered country but not country enough to be labeled unresourceful. We have gun store right next to a kroger, and a home depot, and sporting goods store within 10 minutes of my house. people in the burbs are crazy as far as OMG THERES ZOMBIES IDK WHAT TO DO. Most in my area will leave so thats plenty house to raid, and theres plenty of electronic people i know that could get car batarries to energize a house. A decent size creek within walking distance, and i have a water purifier. My house can fit a descent amount of people, but i would only allow close friends in because no family lives near me. I'm set, unless the government decideds to nuck atlanta then i might be in a bit of a pickle. But i doubt the government would do that
cities are def the places to flee and avoid. they are more heavily populated and therefor have plenty of fresh bodies that can and will be infected. just grab your trusty bug out bag and split towards a safer less populated area. i would rather face a pack of zombies in the open, with room to move and run than be backed into a improvised shelter with a hoard of zombies beating at the door and attracting more undead bastards. heck most military bases are in somewhat rural areas, head towards one of them if possible.

military bases are a bad idea. you might think them safe, but they also hold too much open area. and contrary to popular belief, most are very near heavily populated areas. they aren't completely fenced in and each base only has so many supplies. if everyone evacuates to a base, then that only increases the chances of infections spreading to the base.
personally i'd stay in the city. most people's impulse would be to leave which spreads the poplulation in the city. also there are high up buildings and more places to hide. not to mention the supplies. with small shops on every street corner sustenance and makeshift weaponry are readily available at any time. don't go out in the open often.
also the rooftops are a good way to scout for other survivors or plan for an escape route if it becomes necessary (if the gov't wants to blow it up, let's say). also if you have a trusty long-range rifle, you can use this to clear up a little unnecessary mess on the streets.
If the national guard is able to fortify a huge, densly populated city like New York, Chicaco, or Seattle, and the police prefect a rapid infestation response system, then it's possible that huge cities like that would be safer. I don't mean like crappy chain fenses like what they did in Land of the Dead, I mean like real walls and barricades, and a city devided into cells so each sky scraper is protected and can still be defended even if all the rest become infected, along with civilian militia and marksmanship programs, in that case, cities could become nearly invulnerable against zombies. The problem with that is, even though in the very beginning there would be pleanty of supplies, as everying begins to horde their own, all origional supplies would be depleted in the first week. And invicible city would require some sort of resupply.
And lets say everyone save you and your band of dudes are the only survivors in a city like that. Evendtually all the zombies would know where you are, and ulness you go Tarzan with rope bridges between buildings, they will evendtually surround whatever fort you have and there will be no escape, so even then you will run out of supplies evendtually.
In suburbia/the country, even if you turn your home into like a comic book badguy's evil lair, you would probably last a while, but evendtually you will need to search for more food and supplies, and all it would take would be that and in a class 4 outbreak, the zombies would either tear your home apart, or they would besiege you and you would evendtually starve to death.
If man kind cannot contain the zombie infection and create self sufficient zombie free areas like they did in WWZ, cities, suburbs, and countrysides would all evendtually fall and would lead to the death of everyone who cannot create their own food, purify their own water and air, and maintain their own equipment within their own secluded fortress.
Oil Rigs: although these places could be easily defended, and have unlimited energy for a small party, unless a large ammount of greenhouses could be built, floating zombies would evendtually surround the rig making fishing impossible and the gathering of food impossible.
If man kind cannot contain the infection, the ONLY safe alternative would be to either live like the Inuits 4 hundred years ago, or build small, self sufficient communities in frozen territory that produce their own armament, clothing, food, water, elecricity, and equipment.
Wherever you chose to stay, remember that zombies do not heal, and because of this, their bodies will break down after time, probably less than a decade. You shouldn't have to wait more than 20 years after the last city has fallen to be sure that almost every zombie died simply due to erosion of their own tissue.
Ok, since presently I live in a large urban center I would stay put and make the concrete work for me. If they truly are like the slow-moving romero variety even more so. Also, there are plenty more elevated positions which one could make into safe zones. I still believe that the living will be more of an enemy than the dead once TSHTF. However, the down side is a source of potable water. If there is a river nearby one could set up to purify/clean it. With water, and food available I think the city would be the best way to go. Man, thinking about actually having a zombie infestation in a large urban center an inking out an existence in it gives me a chubby (daydreaming of making walls from the bodies of terminated Zs).
The easiest way to purify the water would be to boil it and capture the steam, any steam you catch would be clean, but throw the remaining water back in the river.
true but if it gets in the water supply you may be screwed anyway. steaming should kill it though. i would trust that before i used water purification tablets

sigh.
Steaming doesn't kill anything. It removes water from the impure mixture, and places it in another location where you can't remix.
That is why you should get the water to a high boil before you capture any of the steam. The virus that creates zombies isn't suited for high tempuratures... providing it is like most other living things and has it's own range of tempuratures it can live in. I'd expect it be similar to a cricket, where it can freeze and live, but it can't get too hot. The best way to test this theory though would be to have a pet or something drink the water before you have any.
i would leave the city after a week or so because by then Marshall law will have dropped and most crazies will have died the z's will be a small threat against a snow plow...
