Well, obviously this will happen. I'm suprised there hasn't been a discussion on it already. Looters, thieves and general crazies will abound in a zombie outbreak, ecspecially at the beginning.
I'd say that shooting at vaguely humanoid creatures would desensitize you to busting caps in actual humans, but it would really depend on the individual.

Very true Mr.Hayter, but what if someone couldn't handle the pressure of killing another human being and that they are only used to putting their sights on the undead? Do you have any advice on that?

I don't think that kind of person would still be around after failing to shoot at 'attacking' zombies. If they can't shoot people, how can they shoot the undead, especially when they know it used to be a person.

Anyway, never has been a problem for me. If it moves (or doesn't) I can shoot at it.

If you don't want to shoot humans (which I find entirely understandable, I know I wouldn't want to), then probably the best reaction would be to avoid those situations entirely, and if you're faced with them, run away. But by the later stages, I'm pretty sure most of the looters and crazies will be gone, the looters because they get chomped in their mad rush for stuff, and crazy people because they don't understand the concept of hiding from the zombies. Only the ones who are smart and quiet-ish will still be around (which will probably be a rather small number). Of course, there will probably be people who run around targeting other survivors for their supplies out of neccessity, in which case it's probably best to give them what they want if you don't want to fight.

but it isn't just crazy people and thugs who will be around, there will be survivors just like you. its just too easy to misidentify the living for the dead. so what could be done to identify the survivors without drawing unwanted attention, and that wont stay with them should they die?

or them running from the undead.

or you can just shoot them and check the bodies later when it's safe.

my point exactly, and if u were to use sumthing like spraypaint to indentify the living, and one of them died then everything is ruined cuz some dead will have paint and some living will have paint and we then have the identification problem again.

you won't have to, but how are you going to keep yourself alive if you're always giving your food/ammo away?

Have the living spray themselves, and then travel in groups. If you see a marked group, it's friendly. If you see single marked people in groups of unmarked, shoot at them. If a group of marked people get overwhelmed by zombies, then you have a bigger problem than just differentiating between living and dead.

I'm just saying that if people had a problem with shooting the non-undead, that's pretty much their only option.
In my opinion, anything dangerous dies.
I wouldn't want to do it, but you pretty well have to.
