Non-military member here with a question for you all.

The Zombie Apocalypse hits and martial law is declared, at some point it is assumed the chaos that ensues causes all forms of government structure fail. Before this I would imagine the US Military to have a heavy presence on our soil. At what point does the US Military disband? Will it ever? Will the Marines stay united and become enemies of the Army if they meet in the street, like gangs would over turf disputes? What is the role of the citizen militia?

I think members of the military are in the most fortunate circumstances in the event of a zombie apocalypse. You have the resources, training, and camaraderie to not only fight off the zombies but to also maintain order against gangs. I don't doubt the military would have its share of deserters, rogue Commanders and opportunistic pirates, but for the most part the US Military is our only hope of saving humanity. The average American citizen will be helpless and likely an enemy before long.

But where does your allegiance lie? Who do you put first? You, your family, or your duty?

Honestly for the military, if the apocolypse lasts for long enough, we will all go back to the old school, primal instinct type of military. kick the ass of the guy above you, you take his place in the pecking order and so on.
as far as government rule? i am almost certain that it will fail no matter how hard they try to hold on. then the power of responsibility will befall onto the soldiers/sailors/marines/airmen. and i do believe that each and every one of us will, at least for a time, forget all about the president, the constitution, and all that bullshit anyway, and do whatever can be done for the preserving of human life. to include euthanasia of anyone bitten. There will inevitably be the bad apples of the military, those already tainted and those that will become over time, but rest assured, they will be handled properly.

I got lawyers guns and money. Handle this x)

I've actually got half a notebook of musings on this very subject. The way I imagine it, marines and army would most likely form "outposts" of sorts. Shotwave communications linking them incredibly loosely, divided by geography and former population density. The fleet (i'm in the Navy) would get much leaner. Probably eliminate females from the service altogether. No BS tolerated - endanger the mission = walk the plank kinda discipline. Probably have zero use for the sub fleet, or nuclear carriers. Easier to raid fossil fuel supplies that are laying dormant and train surivivors on diesel engines than it would be to train nuclear engineers. So we'd switch to 4~ diesel dependency and have to take what we needed.

I envision the center of whatever government there is being based on islands. The the "forward outposts" being places such as Coronado in San Diego. Easier to take an island than an inland mass. then fortify it. clean-sweep of the perimeter daily with soundless weapons. From there, loose coordination with whatever joint service outposts existed could be coordinated. But honestly, overall, I imagine we do only marginally better than the better organized civilian factions. But yes, a little better.

heh ... soldiers maybe ... but sailors and airmen - we're here for the college money and to keep our families fed.
