My planned fort
Here is a google map of the area I live in and the planned fortifications for when TSHTF. The grey area is scorched earth that will extend to about 100m in most areas, just so no body can walk right up to the fort and not be seen. The brown shape on the outside is a 3.5m wide by 3.5m deep trench in front of a 3.5m high stockade wall similar to what you would see on a colonial era fort. The red square on the right will be the main gate house which is a neighbours garage right now. and the red square on the left is another neighbour's house that sits on a hill and will be fortified with another wall around it to act as a keep in case the outer wall is breached. The land between the houses will be cleared and made into fields for crops. Everybody here is on well water so that is not an issue as long as there are hand pumps available and there is a fresh water stream that runs through the back corner of the fort. There is also a small path near the left of the map, that will be the retreat path if things get really bad. I know there is a lot of variables and huge amounts of work to make this happen but I have a plan for heavy equipment and I'm pretty sure I can convince my neighbours to chip in when every thing goes to hell.

Just one question, Where are you gonna get the supplies to build this? (And one more :)) What happens if you get attacked by a horde of 50+ zombies while you are building the fort?

Ummm the forest surrounding the area. The scorched earth area will be cleared and the logs put into the walls. And if zombies attack while the fort is being built we kill them. The trench will be dug first so there is some protection. The walls are there for protection from raiders more than the zombies as a trench would be more than enough to stop a zombie. As I said I already have plans for heavy equipment to come in and dig the trench and assist with the planting of the logs in the stockade.
Here is an example of the type of wall I'm talking about. Now put a 3.5m wide and deep trench in front of it.

Eh, I don't think you understood my point.... Chances are that you will run into a large group of zombies, and have you given thought that using heavy machinery makes a lot of noise? Just giving some advice

I have thought of that, and actually the area I live in is very sparsely populated. There might be 3000 people within a days walk of here. Less than a 1000 people within a couple of hours walk. The largest city (450 000) is a 45 minute drive. Odds of a huge horde coming along are small. And if that does happen we have to move to the fall back position. Much smaller, and backs on to a lake. And yes using heavy equipment does make a lot of noise, however a large back hoe (Which is what I will have) will dig that trench in 2 maybe 3 days at most.
What it comes down to for me is, do I take the time right at the beginning of the whole world going to shit and do this or do I become a nomad? Personally I like my chances of being able to finish this quickly enough to be able to support me, my family and the the people I have earmarked for the starting group.

yah most people are like "Oh ill build a super-fort that will fulfill all my needs and dreams" its just they usually don't give much thought to how they are going to build the magical fort. Do they really think during a zombie apocalypse they are going to be in a clear state of mind, well-fed, well-rested, and not to mention batshit paranoid about a zombie suddenly sneaking up on them and tearing there arm off. Oh yeah, thats another thing to consider, the psychological aspect.

Oh I understand that, I see it all the time and like I said there is no doubt in my mind about the amount of work involved in this. On the other hand I'm not talking about 30' high concrete walls and indoor plumbing. I'm thinking 1800's tech here, there is even a place not too far away with horses and a small hobby farm with goats and geese nearby. I will have to 'aquire' those assests. Forts like these were built with hand tools in less than a month by a single garrison during the 1800's. So I figure with 20 or so strong backs and some heavy machines I can have it up in just over a week maybe two.
You are right about the mental state. Personally I'm used to working in high pressure situations and I've been trained for emergencies (I'm in the navy) But I hadn't considered the other's though. I am fairly sure of some people but other's not so much. I guess it will be up to the ones that can handle it to help the other's keep it together long enough to do this.

pretty good plan, but the time it would take for you to do this would be crazy. you'd need 20+ people to get this up and ready for anything. Heres how I would do it.
1. At the red area build a normal fence of some sort, nothing grand just something to hold off a few zombies in case something goes wrong.
2. In the grey area cut down most of the trees and pile them in side the fenced off area.
3. pull up as many tree stumps as you can,adding to the pile of wood. also making for some very nice holes in the ground.
4. Burn the grey area
5. using the chopped down trees build 2 walls, 5m apart from each other.
6. start digging your trench, the soil, rocks, and anything else you dig up dump in between the walls.

chopped trees and stumps, use the trees to maybe add more building inside the wall. And if your using wood stoves or burners to keep warm just burn the stumps.
the area should look like a mini battle field. burned everything with craters and a huge reinforced wall with log buildings inside of it.

Its funny you mention the number of people, I have about 20 people give or take earmarked for life inside. And I don't have to build any buildings right off, there are 6 houses inside the wall already. And I'm planning on digging the trench first and piling the dirt etc on the inside of the trench as an earthen wall that will support the logs for the stockade. Like I said before with the heavy equipment I am going to have available it wont take anymore than 2 maybe 3 days to get the trench dug. I'm also using the lay of the land. The 'U' shaped road in the bottom right hand corner is actually a graveyard that sits about 4 or 5 meters higher than the land surrounding it. This has resulted in a pond just behind it because the land where the houses are is elevated as well. So there is already a natural trench in that section.
And you pretty much described exactly what the plan is for the scorched earth except for the stumps. My guess is that the back hoes will be out of gas by that point so digging up the stumps will have to be done by hand and that is a huge amount of work. I'll either leave them or burn them.
