Permalink Reply by Patrick on January 4, 2011 at 4:24am I'm assuming you are talking about cottage country on Georgian Bay or in around that area up the 400. I don't want to burst your bubble but I do want to give you a little bit of a geography lesson here.
You will have to travel through the St Lawrence Sea Way which is a series of locks designed for 100 000 tonne+ ships. That means giant steel gates operated by heavy machinery. Considering you make it through the sea way you will end up in Montreal the second largest city in the country at 1.6 million people, then down the 401 through Kingston population 120 000. Kingston is home to Canadian Forces Base Kingston, mostly a training facility but still has armed and trained military personnel on base. It is also home to the country's largest maximum security prison. Next major stop along the way... Belleville population 50K and home to the largest military base in the country.
Assuming you've made it this far you have a choice. You can head north up the 62 for two hours to Bancroft (its a small town of 3800) and then cut across the province on the 118 for another two hours and you will be in the Bracebridge which is only 15 000 people. At that point you will be on the edge of the Muskokas, which is like I said, I'm assuming you are heading, and I'm guessing that you'll only have another couple of hours driving to get where ever it is you're heading.
Your other option is to follow the 401 to the 400 then head north, of course that means you would be passing another CF Base in Trenton and through the most densely populated area of the country with people numbering in the 10s of millions.
I would just like to point one last thing out. I am from Ontario and I know the area fairly well that you are talking about. As a matter of fact I have friends up there and I used to summer there as well. The people in that region are all very hearty hunters and fishermen. By the time the remains of your party get there I'm sure they will have the situation well in hand and already be fortified. They are friendly and will most likely be willing to take you in or help you out. Just don't expect to walk into a deserted area and take or do what you want.
Oh and pack some warm clothes odds are you won't make it there before the end of summer and it gets cold up there in the fall and winter.
I hope I didn't come across as too much of an ass, but I had to point this out to you. I've here Americans with plans like this all the time and I just wanted you to be aware of what you are getting yourself into.
Permalink Reply by Austin Parsons on January 4, 2011 at 11:06am Well initially it seems like a good plan but you`re overlooking some important details. Firstly rethink your weapons loadout, each member of the group should have one melee weapon and a firearm, I recommend the katana, baseball bat and the machete but not the tomahawks, they will work well getting through the skull but pulling them back out is going to be difficult. Focus on ammo instead of carrying more guns because more guns are bulkier and heavier than a few boxes of ammo. But i do agree with the holsters and leather jacket, leather is a tough material and human teeth have trouble penetrating it (as long as the leather isn`t pierced or torn the saliva can`t enter your wounds and you won`t be infected)
Secondly don`t even think about going to the gun store, you`re right that it is the obvious first stop but that`s why you should avoid it, the gun store owner will either have barricaded themselves in and be shooting intruders or it will be abandoned and will have been completely looted, so stock up before the outbreak is on your doorstep. Besides your gun list above was good the only addition I`d make is a long distance rifle.
Thirdly, the boats are a good idea as long as you are guaranteed to get one, but remember a lot of people are also going to think of taking boats to escape so be sure to get there while there are still boats in port and have a backup plan if you don`t. Also remember that your boats shouldn`t rely only on fuel, as fuel is finite, make sure you can also sail of paddle it and use fossil fuel as a last resort. Also be sure to defend your anchor line from zombies attempting to climb up and to scan the shore before you send out a scouting team.
Fourthly, a historical fort is not something that is easy to maintain. In the past it was run by an entire army, so be sure to have a sizable party when trying to hold it, you`ll need the numbers. Also take into account the distance you will be travelling, so make sure you stock up and have plenty of supplies when you leave, and be sure to pack wilderness gear for your shore parties, you won`t be able to stop and raid major cities (they`ll be too heavily infected) and you may need to hike a ways inland to reach the small towns.
As a final thought I think that you should move you`re place of retreat a little more out of the way, a lot of refugees will be heading north and will have zombies following them, so the farther off the map you are the better.
So like I said the initial plan is a good one but as any good artist will tell you it`s all about the details and overlooking them could prove fatal, you need to consider the possibilities
if the powers out in the north in the winter you will freeze to death.
