You should have some kind of rechargeable batteries, as well as a way to recharge them (solar, wind-up charger, etc...). I have a radio with flashlight that has a wind-up charger. It has a power outlet for charging phones, etc... That cold be easily modified to charge any portable device, like your Kindle. :)
