Day One- The Outbreak

I hope that, if you're reading this, these things have been exterminated. I don't know what to call them other than monsters. Like the zombies from popular horror movies of my childhood. I was on my way to my girlfriends house. It was a normal October night, chilly but not frigid. The wind was calm and the sky was clear. I paused a second to gaze at the night sky before hopping in my '01 Ford Taurus. There was something oddly sinister about the calm. I drove to my girlfriends house with no problems, the cops were busy with other things i guess, i didn't even have to slow down, at least 8 cruisers sped past me so fast I hardly noticed the sirens. I alone was going 75 mph. Crime rates had been going up in our area so the sudden burst of flashing lights a sirens sounded no alarms anymore. I pulled into her drive way honking the horn to announce my presence. Her parents didn't take to kindly to my dating their precious daughter, so i rarely stepped foot in their house anymore. I waited for five minutes and there was no response from her house. Not even a flicker of the curtains by a curious, if not pissed off father. With a sigh, I opened the door and walked up to the door knocking sharply on the wooden door. I heard scuffling and assumed it was someone answering the door so i steadied myself to face my beloved's parents. A window opened on the second floor. A breaking shuddering voice sounded from it. I scarcely recognized it as my girlfriend's.

"Cody? Dad's gone crazy...I-I-I think he killed someone." No way she could be joking about that. I ran to my car picking up the crow bar I kept under the passenger seat. I didn't remember that her dad was a federal law enforcement officer. I didn't think that maybe he had a gun. But even if I had, I don't think that I would have cared. I remember adrenaline rushing through my veins at the terror in Brittany's voice. I braced against the door, my crowbar cocked back ready to bury it in the bastards skull. Slowly, I opened the door peeking around into the foyer. I could see a a woman lying in a pool of what I can only imagine was her blood. I pair of bare feet lay at the top of the stairs, the body attatched to them was hidden by the corner of the wall upstairs. I held my breath listening for the sound of footsteps, breathing, whispering, anything that would give Brittany's dad's position away. I heard a soft sigh coming from the living room. I slid in the door crawling up the stairs a fast as i could. Brittany was in her room, judging by the window she spoke out of. As i reached the top I looked down at the body and had to smother a scream by biting my jacket. I couldn't recognize the body as male or female. It was only the basic form of a humanoid that identified it as a human. It looked about the size of a kid my age. Blood covered the hallway walls, floors, and a handprint was smeared near the handle of Brittany's door. Stepping over the body, I softly rapped on the door frame looking around the corner down the stairs with my back against the wall.

The door opened slowly and I backed in. Closing the door once I was inside, I turned to face Brittany. Her hair was matted and sloppy. Blood covered her white t-shirt Quickly I checked her for injury, other than a bruise on her leg, she was ok. Her hands were shaking as i held them trying to calm her down. "Baby look, Its gonna be ok. Its gonna be ok. I'm going to get you outta here. Where is everyone else?" She just shook her head. After a few deep breaths she steadied herself enough to answer. "I don't know, none of them are home." Her voice still shook, but sounded slightly stronger. Looking around quickly I tried to figure a way to escape the room without going down the stairs. If Brittany's father had gone homicidal, I didn't want to take her down past him if he was near the stairs. Brittany's window wasn't that high off the ground, despite being the second story of the house. Silently I motioned Brittany to follow me. At first she hesitated, then a bump on a door sent to the window faster than I could stop here. She slid off the roof falling 8 feet to the grass of her front yard. The door cracked loudly behind me, without looking back I leaped to the ground rolling as i hit the ground. "Get in the car!" I yelled sprinting to the car door. As soon as we were in the car and the doors were closed, I slammed it in reverse as someone I didn't recognize seemed to fall out of the window sliding a bloody path down the roof falling head first on the lawn with a sickening crunch.
Speeding away, Brittany remained silent, her breath coming in short sharp gasps, like just before when she cried. "Are you ok?" I asked. "That wasn't Dad" she said softly, "that wasn't Dad."

I pulled my cell phone flipping it open, and dialed 911. "C'mon c'mon...." Nothing but a busy signal. "This can't be happening. We need to get to the cops, so I continued down the road in the direction of the State Troopers Barracks. My phone rang, it was my friend Stephen.
"Hello?"
"Dude, I don't have time to explain. Remember the zombie stuff we joked about back in high school. I think its happening..."
