RUN, David Baker!

Life here in the "house" has become routine to the point of boredom. We've played every board and card game here, and even began inventing new ones. What was once an entire bucket of tennis balls have dwindled to a handful thanks to our terrible habit of whacking them too hard and watching them bounce off the back porch and into the beings below. Mildred and Jim left for Camp St. Teresa today. They are anxious to see their son. We were all sad to see them go, they were like surrogate parents to us. At least there’ll be more food and room until we’re ready to leave again. This place is the safest we’ve found. It took a lot of work to get it this way, but we’ve had zero encounters for a few weeks now. Not that the Zeds have given up, it’s just that they can’t get to us. For now.

We had a pretty successful “scavenger hunt” today. We found some canned mangos and apricots, plus a whole, unopened container of beef jerky! Apparently the last people through town didn’t like the fruit, and the jerky canister had rolled under a shelf and was missed! Lucky us. I should buy a lottery ticket… Jim and Mildred are very nice people. Jim is a retired police officer (30 years on the streets) and Mildred was a stay-at-home-mom. They only had one child, a son, who lives in California… Continue

While I write this, I can see both my daughters and my wife sleeping on the floor. While the building is secure, and we do get some sleep, it isn’t the fitful rest we need or want. Nerves are shot, tempers are short and we are running low on supplies. I’m sure playing lookout and keeping watch is making me more tired than ever. Thankfully we found this place and met Jim and Mildred. I’ll write more on that later.
