No man can avoid all men(and zombies) all the time. Leather and Kevlar should do just fine. I might suggest knee pads and elbow pads for those who expect to have to have close quarters situations.
My protection is distance... there is no armor that will save you.... if a zombie gets close enough to you to take a bite or grab you you are dead you will be playing in the red of the game of averages.... the first zombie attack my not get you but…
I would prefer to wearing jeans or workshop uniform which is very thick but heavy for body protection.
There's also a new trend of "Harem Pants" that might be fit for the terms of "protection" because of it's width…
