I usually use photoshop to do it. I'll take the picture of the person that I want to edit desaturate everything but the lips, eyes, and fingernails (if they are in the photo). Then I color burn around those areas to give a bruised and/or bloodied effect. If I can I edit shots of make-up zombie effects and transform them onto the picture editing where needed to fit. Once I've got the picture to where I want it, I blend it in using a color burn layer to make everything look like it fits. It takes me about 5 to 6 hours to do but over all it's a lot of fun.
