Yep, I say make a break for it as a group. Maybe start a big fire (structure fire, forest fire, whatever) if you can do it quickly and put it between yourselves and the zombies.

The only way I'm going to kill myself in that situation, is if I'm already infected, and I can kill a whole lot of zombies at the same time. For instance, leading some zombies into a trap/explosion radius, etc.

If you can't get your hands on a shotgun, you'd be best off with an axe. Something with reach, that can take whole limbs off, and can also be used as a tool.
