The salt is for several reasons, not just to season food with or ass electolytes, although they will do good at this once the sports drink mixes are gone. But you can also brush your teeth with salt, and even clean a wound from what I understand (maybe that's where we get that old saying?). You could preserve some fish or other small bit of meat to last a while. If you had enough you could even salt the ground to clear yourself a longer-term location

How do you pack your mess kit? Do you use mil. issue ones? What do you put into them, and how do you pack complimentary items that don't fit.
